background and objectives : each year, enteroviruses infect millions of people and cause different diseases. the agents are usually detected using cell culture. rd (rhabdomyosarcoma) and l20b (l cells) are among the recommended cells by the world health organisation (who) for this purpose. even though cell culture is the most common method used in diagnosing enteroviruses in stool specimens, th...

PCR for the diagnosis of enterovirus infections is resource intensive but is increasingly used due to wide availability. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) that detect heterotypical antibodies against enterovirus immunoglobulin M (IgM), IgA, and IgG were compared with reverse transcription-PCR by using primers specific to the 5' untranslated regions of 60 enterovirus species. The ELISA...

Nonparaneoplastic opsoclonus-myoclonus ataxia syndrome is a rare neuroinflammatory condition featured by opsoclonus, myoclonus, ataxia, and cognitive behavioral disturbance. The authors report an observation of enterovirus 71-associated opsoclonus-myoclonus ataxia syndrome evolving toward full recovery on intravenous intravenous immunoglobulin (IG) treatment. Based on this case report, enterovi...

The genus Enterovirus, belonging to the family Picornaviridae, includes well-known pathogens, such as poliovirus, coxsackievirus, and rhinovirus. Brefeldin A (BFA) impedes replication of several enteroviruses through inhibition of Golgi-specific BFA resistance factor 1 (GBF1), a regulator of secretory pathway integrity and transport. GBF1 mediates the GTP exchange of Arf1, which in activated fo...

INTRODUCTION Fulminant cardiopulmonary failure is a severe complication of hand, foot and mouth diseases due to enterovirus 71 infection, with a high mortality rate. The treatment is mainly supportive with aggressive cardiopulmonary resuscitation. We report the use of continuous veno-venous hemofiltration in a patient with pulmonary edema and shock due to enterovirus 71 infection. To the best o...

Enterovirus infections have been linked to type 1 diabetes in several studies. Enteroviruses also have tropism to pancreatic islets and can cause β-cell damage in experimental models. Viral persistence has been suspected to be an important pathogenetic factor. This study evaluates whether gut mucosa is a reservoir for enterovirus persistence in type 1 diabetic patients. Small-bowel mucosal biop...

OBJECTIVE To review the association between current enterovirus infection diagnosed with molecular testing and development of autoimmunity or type 1 diabetes. DESIGN Systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies, analysed with random effects models. DATA SOURCES PubMed (until May 2010) and Embase (until May 2010), no language restrictions, studies in humans only; reference li...

Introduction : Viral meningitis is an inflammation of the leptomeninges as a manifestation of central nervous system (CNS) infection, and more than 85% of viral meningitis cases are caused by non-polio enteroviruses. Molecular methods such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) are increasingly used to detect and type non-polio enteroviruses. Here, we describe the impact of these viruses on asept...

The whole-genome sequences of seven fatal enterovirus 71 (EV71) strains, isolated in southern China, in 2014, were determined. The complete genome sequences of these strains displayed close relationships to native EV71 strains and showed 94.2% to 99.8% identity to each other. All of these strains were assigned to subgenotype C4a based on phylogenetic analysis of the VP1 gene.
