Micro-particle image velocimetry (μPIV) is used to visualize paired images of micro particles seeded in blood flows. The images are cross-correlated to give an accurate velocity profile. A protocol is presented for μPIV measurements of blood flows in microchannels. At the scale of the microcirculation, blood cannot be considered a homogeneous fluid, as it is a suspension of flexible particles s...

Three-dimensional numerical simulations are performed to study the stability of a sedimenting suspension of weakly flexible fibers. It is well known that a suspension of rigid rods sedimenting under gravity at low Reynolds number is unstable to concentration fluctuations owing to hydrodynamic interactions. Flexible fibers, however, reorient while settling and even weak flexibility can alter the...

We examine the response of a quasi-two-dimensional colloidal suspension to localized circular driving induced by optical tweezers. This approach allows us resolve over 3 orders magnitude in P\'eclet number (Pe) and provide direct observation sharp spatial crossover from far- near-thermal-equilibrium regions suspension. In particular, particles migrate high low Pe form strongly inhomogeneous ste...

Macromolecular or polymeric liquids consist of polymer solutions, polymer melts, particle suspension fluids, and many biological fluids. Polymer solutions are made of polymers dissolved in solutions or solvent; polymer melts are molten polymers; particle suspension fluids consist of solid particles suspended in a matrix fluid which may be a viscous or viscoelastic fluid, blood flows consist of ...

By using molecular dynamics simulations we demonstrate that at high P\'eclet numbers a nanographene suspended in shear flow aligns constant orientation angle, contrast with the rotary motion predicted by Jeffery's theory. This instantaneous alignment of is due to hydrodynamic slip fluid-particle interface, and produces marked reduction suspension viscosity compared no-slip case.

We investigate granular transport by a fluid flow under steady-state driving conditions, from the bed-load regime to the suspension regime, with an experimental system based on a conical rheometer. The mean granular volume fraction φg , the mean granular velocity ug , and the fluid velocity uf are obtained as a function of depth inside the bed using refractive index matching and particle-tracki...

Tadalafil is a phosphodiesterase 5 inhibitor used orally as solid dosage form. The suspension of this drug has been used for pulmonary arterial hypertension treatment in pediatrics. The aim of this work was to investigate the influence of non-ionic surfactant (Tween 80) on the physical characteristics, drug particle size, and stress-shear rate rheogram of tadalafil 0.1% suspension. Several form...

This paper discusses the development of two different bi-phase flows. Fourth-grade fluid exhibiting non-Newtonian nature is taken as base liquid. Two-phase suspension obtained by using spherically homogeneous metallic particle. Owing to intense application mechanical and chemical multiphase flows through curved bent configurations effectively transforms flow dynamics fluid. Differential equatio...

We derive a lubrication model describing gravity-driven thin film flow of a suspension of heavy particles in viscous fluid. The main features of this continuum model are an effective mixture viscosity and a particle settling velocity, both depending on particle concentration. The resulting equations form a 2 × 2 system of conservation laws in the film thickness h(x, t) and in φh, where φ(x, t) ...

This paper addresses the dam-break problem for particle suspensions, that is, the flow of a finite volume of suspension released suddenly down an inclined flume. We were concerned with concentrated suspensions made up of neutrally buoyant non-colloidal particles within a Newtonian fluid. Experiments were conducted over wide ranges of slope, concentration and mass. The major contributions of our...
