Paper biosensors: an origami sensor is printed on a single piece of paper, folded into a three-dimensional fluidic device, and encapsulated by thermal lamination. Aptamer is trapped in the fluidic channel, where it binds to the target and releases an enzyme to generate a signal. The device is read out using a digital multimeter.
In the pneumatic driving system for a soft mechanism, control valve is most heavy and expensive device. To realize compact inexpensive system, it necessary to reduce size, weight, cost of valve. previous study, low-cost flow rate type servo valves, that uses buckled tubes gate mechanism in an analog way, were proposed tested. However, these drift overlap zone was observed owing plastic deformat...
We designed a flexible probe to record both neuroelectrical and neurochemical activities (Figure 1). This probe has four microelectrodes for neural recording and a fluidic channel covered with a semipermeable membrane; the membrane is used for microdialysis in the brain. We measured impedance of the electrodes, and examined the leakage of dialysate from the fluidic channel in vitro.
This paper reviews recent developments in integrated fluidic mesosystems, based on low-temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) technology, in this laboratory and elsewhere. LTCC is shown to be an advantageous technique for integrated fluidic systems, due to its simplicity, low cost and ease of integration with other technologies and components (silicon, polymer, circuit boards. Also, the techniques...
The benefits of the integration of novel optofluidic elements, e.g., fluidic lenses and liquid-core / liquid-cladding (L2) waveguides, for on-chip optical sample analysis are discussed. Using properly designed microfluidic channels, pre-calculated flow rate ratios and transparent fluids with different refractive indices but similar viscosity novel fluidic optical elements can be created. In thi...
The suitability of electrowetting-on-dielectric (EWD) microfluidics for true lab-on-a-chip applications is discussed. The wide diversity in biomedical applications can be parsed into manageable components and assembled into architecture that requires the advantages of being programmable, reconfigurable, and reusable. This capability opens the possibility of handling all of the protocols that a ...
In our previous work we have shown that walking can be implemented on quadrupeds with stii legs and only one actuated degree of freedom in the hip, based on the concept of controlled momentum transfer. In this paper we show via simulations and experiments on two diierent quadruped robots that dynamically stable and robust walking can be achieved via an open loop controller which is active only ...
This paper describes the design and fabrication of a "pop-up" electrochemical paper-based analytical device (pop-up-EPAD) to measure beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB)-a biomarker for diabetic ketoacidosis-using a commercial combination BHB/glucometer. Pop-up-EPADs are inspired by pop-up greeting cards and children's books. They are made from a single sheet of paper folded into a three-dimensional (3D)...
A DNA microarray with 12,000 features was integrated with a microfluidic cartridge to automate the fluidic handling steps required to carry out a gene expression study of the human leukemia cell line (K562). The fully integrated microfluidic device consists of microfluidic pumps/mixers, fluid channels, reagent chambers, and a DNA microarray silicon chip. Microarray hybridization and subsequent ...
Microfluidic devices have applications in chemical analysis, biomedical devices and ink-jets. An integrated microfluidic system incorporates electrical signals on-chip. Such electro-microfluidic devices require fluidic and electrical connection to larger packages. Therefore electrical and fluidic packaging of electro-microfluidic devices is key to the development of integrated microfluidic syst...
