Cow milk proteins belong to major food antigens in infancy. The aim of the study was to determine the levels of cow milk-specific IgG and IgA antibodies in healthy infants, both breastfed and formula fed, during the first six months of age. The initial levels of these antibodies were determined by ELISA in the cord blood samples of 75 healthy infants. Their concentrations were then determined d...

AIM To provide a comprehensive report of fluoride concentration in UK infant milks and estimate their contribution to daily fluoride intake. METHODS A total of 60 formula milk products available commercially or within a hospital environment were analysed, along with eight pasteurised cow's milk samples. Formula milk products requiring preparation were reconstituted with fresh Leeds tap water ...

OBJECTIVE We compared energy expenditure (EE) of preterm infants fed their mother's milk versus preterm infant formula. Study design A prospective, randomized crossover study of 13 healthy, appropriate weight for gestational age, gavage-fed, preterm infants. Before the study and according to our feeding protocol, infants uniformly received alternate feeds of human milk and formula. Each infant ...

Data are presented on faecal water losses in 93 preterm infants being fed breast milk (72 infant days) or formula (280 days). Losses per kg increased to 4 weeks, when they amounted to 11% of water requirement in infants fed breast milk and 8% in infants fed formula.

A two-step-cascade membrane separation by ultrafiltration was performed on caprine milk prepared under different temperature conditions to eliminate beta-lactoglobulin (β-Lg) from the whey fraction. Effects of temperature treatment and membrane pore size on the elimination of β-Lg and retention of alpha-lactalbumin (α-La) were examined to determine the optimum permeate fraction for production o...

A simple and sensitive kinetic-catalytic method was used for the determination of iodine concentration in human milk, cows' milk and infant formula. The method, based on the catalytic effect of iodine on the redox reaction between CeIV and AsIII, was first described by Sandell and Kolthoff. The calibration curve was constructed by plotting absorbance of CeIV after a known time versus iodine con...

Correspondence Elimination diets in eczema Sir, We read with interest the paper by T J David on anaphylactic shock during elimination diets for severe atopic eczema. We recently observed a similar case. This girl had developed severe diarrhoea at 5 weeks of age while being fed an adapted cows' milk formula (Preaptamil, Milupa). During a milk free diet her symptoms subsided, but diarrhoea recurr...

BACKGROUND The relation between infant feeding and growth has been extensively evaluated, but studies examining the volume of formula milk consumption on infant growth are limited. This study aimed to examine the effects of early feeding of larger volumes of formula on growth and risk of overweight in later infancy. METHODS In total, 1093 infants were studied prospectively. Milk records colle...

In a double blind crossover study 10 children with infantile colic were fed breast milk and cow's milk formula, untreated and treated with lactase. Colic was present on 71% of breast milk and 89% of cow's milk days. Daily duration and severity of colic did not differ for milk preparations.
