In this work the performance of a wavelength division multiple access (WDMA) system with direct detection receiver is investigated. For this purpose, the probability of error in a WDMA network with OOK modulation considering crosstalk, ISI, photo detector noise and thermal noise is calculated and the effect of each on system performance is investigated. The system performance in presence of PIN...

We consider the problem of detecting the true quantum state among r possible ones, based of measurements performed on n copies of a finite dimensional quantum system. A special case is the problem of discriminating between r probability measures on a finite sample space, using n i.i.d. observations. In this classical setting it is known that the averaged error probability decreases exponentiall...

The role acquired by modeling in plant sciences includes integration of knowledge, exploration of the behavior of the plant system beyond the range of conditions covered experimentally and decision support. The purpose of the model determines its structure. Initially process artificial intelligence (PAI) were developed separately from structural (or: architectural or morphological) plant models...

When dealing with modern big data sets, a very common theme is reducing the set through a random process. These generally work by making “many simple estimates” of the full data set, and then judging them as a whole. Perhaps magically, these “many simple estimates” can provide a very accurate and small representation of the large data set. The key tool in showing how many of these simple estima...

Markovian pure jump processes model a wide range of phenomena, including chemical reactions at the molecular level, dynamics of wireless communication networks, and the spread of epidemic diseases in small populations. There exist algorithms such as Gillespie’s stochastic simulation algorithm (SSA) and Anderson’s modified next reaction method (MNRM) that simulate a single path with the exact di...

Chernoff faces have been proposed as a tool for scientific and information visualization. However, the effectiveness of this form of visualization is still open to speculation. Chernoff faces, it is suggested, make use of humans' apparently inherent ability to recognize faces and small changes in facial characteristics. Limited research has been conducted to assess how well Chernoff faces make ...

We give two refinements to the Chernoff bound for the sum of nonidentical Bernoulli random variables with parameters pi, where 0 < pi < 1 and i = 1, ..., n. Traditionally, the Chernoff bound is a function of the arithmetic mean of the pi’s, n−1 ∑n i=1 pi. The refined bounds contain the term n−1 ∑n i=1 p 2 i , and hence, are able to capture the variations of pi’s.

We consider the problem of detecting the true quantum state among r possible ones, based on measurements performed on n of copies of a finite dimensional quantum system. It is known that the exponent for the rate of decrease of the averaged error probability cannot exceed the multiple quantum Chernoff bound (MQCB) defined as the worst case (smallest) quantum Chernoff distance between any possib...
