BACKGROUND Epidemiological data on subarachnoid haemorrhage incidence and case-fatality rates are scarce in the south-eastern Mediterranean region. We conducted a population-based study in Evros Province, located in north-eastern Greece, to determine subarachnoid haemorrhage incidence over a 5-year period (2001-2005). METHODS Evros Province has a well-defined, largely homogeneous population w...

Intracerebral haemorrhage is a rare complication of polyarteritis nodosa (PAN). We present the clinico-pathologic findings of a 62 year-old patient with systemic involvement by PAN, who developed temporary decrease of consciousness and a mild left hemisyndrome due to a small right dorsal thalamic haemorrhage. No clear cause for the haemorrhage was found on postmortem examination.

Objective: To determine the incidence of primary postpartum haemorrhage, identify risk/aetiological factors contributing to primary postpartum haemorrhage and review the different therapeutic approaches in the management of primary postpartum haemorrhage. Method: A retrospective case-control study of all patients with primary postpartum haemorrhage from January 1, 2001 to December 31, 2010 at O...

OBJECTIVE Vascular responsiveness to vasoconstrictors is known to be attenuated in haemorrhagic shock. In this study we assessed the temporal development and the underlying mechanisms of haemorrhage-induced vascular hyporeactivity to pressor agents. METHODS In phenobarbital-anaesthetised rats hypotension was induced by graded haemorrhage (8 ml blood total). Sham-manipulated rats served as con...

Little is known about the pathophysiology of intracerebral haemorrhage that occurs during anticoagulant treatment. In observational studies, investigators have reported larger haematoma volumes and worse functional outcome in these patients than in those with intracerebral haemorrhage and a normal coagulation status. The need to prevent extensive haematoma enlargement by rapid reversal of the a...

Haemorrhage-induced immunosuppression has been linked to nosocomial infections. We assessed the impact of monophosphoryl lipid A, a Toll/interleukin-1 receptor-domain-containing adaptor protein inducing interferon-biased Toll-like receptor-4 agonist currently used as a vaccine adjuvant in humans, on post-haemorrhage susceptibility to infection. We used a mouse model of post-haemorrhage pneumoni...

OBJECTIVE To estimate the risk of occurrence of subarachnoid haemorrhage in first degree relatives (parents, siblings, children) of patients with subarachnoid haemorrhage. DESIGN Population based cohort study using data from the Danish National Discharge Registry and the Central Person Registry. SUBJECTS Incident cases of subarachnoid haemorrhage admitted to hospital from 1977 to 1995 (9367...

One hundred eyes undergoing intracapsular cataract extraction and 100 undergoing extracapsular extraction were examined prospectively within one week postoperatively and again at 6-10 weeks postoperatively. Indirect ophthalmoscopy showed vitreous haemorrhage in 36% of the intracapsular group and 13% of the extracapsular group. Vitreous haemorrhage was significantly related to the occurrence of ...

OBJECTIVE To determine safety and effectiveness of uterine packing to stop hemorrhage in postpartum and post abortal cases. METHODS Patients who delivered either vaginally or via Caesarian section who developed primary post partum haemorrhage and post abortal patients developing primary post partum haemorrhage refractory to conventional medical treatment, were included in the study. Packing w...
