During 1990, in response to the common problem of a filled hard disk, I became obsessed with the idea of producing a compact visualization of directory tree structures. Since the 80 Megabyte hard disk in the HCIL was shared by 14 users it was difficult to determine how and where space was used. Finding large files that could be deleted, or even determining which users consumed the largest share...

This paper considers the issue of modeling the pivot nonlinearity in a typical hard disk drive, taking into account viscous friction, Coulomb friction and hysteresis effects. It presents a nonlinear compensator design, based on a proposed model, to make the compensated system behave like a double integrator regardless of the magnitude of the input current. It describes extensive experiments, ca...

The magnetic hard disc drive industry continues to face serious challenges in its quest for ever decreasing bit size. This review summarizes recent advances and promising new technology which have foundations in fundamental physical principles. Some advantages of these new ideas are illustrated through micromagnetic modeling and the numerous challenges associated with their implementation are h...

this article proposed a methodology for computer numerical control (CNC) machine scoring. The case study company is a manufacturer of hard disk drive parts in Thailand. In this company, sample of parts manufactured from CNC machine are usually taken randomly for quality inspection. These inspection data were used to make a decision to shut down the machine if it has tendency to produce parts th...

– We use video microscopy to study a two-dimensional (2D) model fluid of charged colloidal particles suspended in water and compute the pressure from the measured particle configurations. Direct experimental control over the particle density by means of optical tweezers allows the precise measurement of pressure as a function of density. We compare our data with theoretical predictions for the ...

The advent of devices based on single dopants, such as the single-atom transistor, the single-spin magnetometer and the single-atom memory, has motivated the quest for strategies that permit the control of matter with atomic precision. Manipulation of individual atoms by low-temperature scanning tunnelling microscopy provides ways to store data in atoms, encoded either into their charge state, ...

Using real-time hard disk recording, we have developed an optical system for the long-duration detection of changes in membrane potential from 1,020 sites with a high temporal resolution. The signal-to-noise ratio was sufficient for analyzing the spreading pattern of excitatory waves in frog atria in a single sweep.

Progress is reported in the establishment of a database of genetically determined neurological conditions. There are now 1,300 conditions and 3,400 references store on the hard disk of a microcomputer. The database is searched, and a differential diagnosis obtained, by choosing a small number of signs and symptoms from a comprehensive list of cardinal features.

The understanding of tribo- and electro-chemical phenomenons on the molecular level at a sliding interface is a field of growing interest. Fundamental chemical and physical insights of sliding surfaces are crucial for understanding wear at an interface, particularly for nano or micro scale devices operating at high sliding speeds. A complete investigation of the electrochemical effects on high ...

We present a Monte Carlo simulation technique by which the free energy of disordered systems can be computed directly. It is based on thermodynamic integration. The central idea is to construct an analytically solvable reference system from a configuration which is representative for the state of interest. The method can be applied to lattice models (e.g., the Ising model) as well as off-lattic...
