We postulate that supermassive black-holes grow in the centers of galaxies until they unbind the galactic gas that feeds them. We show that the corresponding self-regulation condition yields a correlation between black-hole mass (Mbh) and galaxy velocity dispersion (σ) as inferred in the local universe, and recovers the observed optical and X-ray luminosity functions of quasars at redshifts up ...
We investigate a model in which galactic nuclei form via the coalescence of pre-existing stellar systems containing supermassive black holes. Merger simulations are carried out using N -body algorithms that can follow the formation and decay of a black-hole binary and its effect on the surrounding stars down to sub-parsec scales. Our initial stellar systems have steep central density cusps simi...
By varying the density of solution-processed lithium fluoride (sol-LiF) nanoparticles at the interface between tin-doped indium oxide (ITO) and poly(3,4ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS), we have demonstrated that the electronic hole collection efficiency of an organic photovoltaic cell can be optimized through tuning the energy level alignment at the ITO/PEDOT:PSS inter...
We present results of various types of numerical simulations of black hole accretion disks and find that those flows which are relatively nondissipative and which contain accretion shocks are the best candidates so far. The power density spectra (PDS) reveal the aspects which are similar to what are observed in black hole candidates.
When a black hole accretes slowly, the radiative cooling of the infalling gas is weak and the accretion disk does not form. A hot collisionless quasi-spherical halo is formed instead. The properties of such halos are discussed. The rate of accretion, the radiative efficiency, and the temperature and density near the hole are evaluated.
The ETS-NOCV analysis was applied to describe the σ-hole in a systematic way in a series of halogen compounds, CF3-X (X = I, Br, Cl, F), CH3I, and C(CH3)nH3-n-I (n = 1,2,3), as well as for the example germanium-based systems. GeXH3, X = F, Cl, H. Further, the ETS-NOCV analysis was used to characterize bonding with ammonia for these systems. The results show that the dominating contribution to t...
Optical physical properties of neutral and charged quinquethiophene monomer, and neutral and cationic pi-dimeric quinquethiophenes were investigated with density functional theory as well as the two dimensional (2D) site (transition density matrix) and three dimensional (3D) cube (transition density and charge difference density) representations, stimulated by the recent experimental report [T....
The Bitter decoration technique is used to study the trapping of single and multiple quanta vortices by a lattice of circular microholes. By keeping a thin superconducting layer (the bottom) inside each hole we are able to visualise the trapped vortices. From this we determine, for the first time, the filling factor FF, i.e. the number of vortices captured inside a hole. In all cases the sample...
The range-separated hybrid density functionals are very successful in describing a wide range of molecular and solid-state properties accurately. In principle, such functionals are designed from spherically averaged or system averaged as well as reverse engineered exchange holes. In the present attempt, the screened range-separated hybrid functional scheme has been applied to the meta-GGA rung ...
I review the observed temporal X-ray properties of Galactic black hole candidates and the status of theoretical modeling of these properties. Like spectral X-ray properties, which has so far attracted most of the attention, the temporal properties, such as power spectral density, hard X-ray time lags, and coherence functions, contain information on some of the same physical properties of invers...
