Hysteretic energy dissipation in conventional structural configurations can be undesirable if it is achieved by the damage of primary structural members. Ideally, this hysteretic energy dissipation should occur in structural elements that are “disposable” (i.e., structural fuses that can be replaced without disturbance to the main system, just like real fuses). Much work has been accomplished o...

We create mechanical metamaterials whose response to uniaxial compression can be programmed by lateral confinement, allowing monotonic, nonmonotonic, and hysteretic behavior. These functionalities arise from a broken rotational symmetry which causes highly nonlinear coupling of deformations along the two primary axes of these metamaterials. We introduce a soft mechanism model which captures the...

Following the approach of [22], we derive a system of FokkerPlanck equations to model a stock-market in which hysteretic agents can take long and short positions. We show numerically that the resulting mesoscopic model has rich behaviour, being hysteretic at the mesoscale and allowing bubbles and volatility clustering in particular.

The latest microprocessor roadmaps show not only ever-increasing performance and speed, but also the demand for higher currents with faster slew rates while maintaining tighter supply-voltage tolerances. This topic addresses these challenges by reviewing and comparing various control approaches for singleand multi-phase synchronous buck converters. An optimized hysteretic control algorithm is s...

This paper presents investigation carried out, including experimental and numerical studies, on low-rise shear-dominated brick masonry structures for the calculation of force reduction factor R. Basic experimental tests were conducted on masonry constituent materials for mechancial characterization. In-plane quasi-static cyclic tests were conducted on twelve full scale brick masonry walls, to u...

We study synchronization and noise-induced resonance phenomena in systems of globally coupled oscillators, each possessing finite inertia. The behavior of the order parameter, which measures the collective synchronization of the system, is investigated as the noise level and the coupling strength are varied, and hysteretic behavior is manifested. The power spectrum of the phase velocity is also...

Abstract. We consider a model system describing the two-dimensional flow of a conducting fluid surrounded by a ferromagnetic solid under the influence of the hysteretic response of the surrounding medium. We assume that this influence can be represented by the Preisach hysteresis operator. Existence and uniqueness of solutions for the resulting system of PDEs with hysteresis nonlinearities is e...

We use a hysteretic Josephson junction as an on-chip detector of the third moment of shot noise of a tunnel junction. The detectable bandwidth is determined by the plasma frequency of the detector, which is about 50 GHz in the present experiment. The third moment of shot noise results in a measurable change of the switching rate when reversing polarity of the current through the noise source. W...

The Casimir force between uncharged metallic surfaces originates from quantum-mechanical zero-point fluctuations of the electromagnetic field. We demonstrate that this quantum electrodynamical effect has a profound influence on the oscillatory behavior of microstructures when surfaces are in close proximity (< or =100 nm). Frequency shifts, hysteretic behavior, and bistability caused by the Cas...

The chattering response at the MRP shadow set switching point for the controlled attitude dynamics of a rigid tumbling spacecraft using delayed state feedback control with MRPs is investigated, where the time delay is assumed to be in the measurement of the state. In addition, a strategy to reduce or completely avoid the chattering phenomena using a hysteretic boundary layer switching rule is e...
