BACKGROUND Renal transplant recipients (RTR) are regarded as a group especially predisposed to onychomycosis. The exact mechanism of increased frequency of onychomycosis in RTR is however not fully understood. OBJECTIVES This study was undertaken to evaluate activity of hydrolitic enzymes of fungi most commonly causing fungal nail infections in RTR and to compare it with enzymatic activity of...

Tuberculosis is a significant health problem in developing countries. Splenic tuberculosis usually occurs as a part of miliary tuberculosis, and ranks third after lung and liver involvement, respectively. Splenic involvement is more common in immunocompromised patients and is very rarely found in immunocompetent patients. Here we report a case of splenic tuberculosis in an immunocompetent patie...

Nontuberculosis mycobacterial cervical lymphadenitis is a relatively common disease in immunocompetent children but a rare disease in immunocompetent adults. We report the diagnosis and treatment of Mycobacterium avium complex cervical lymphadenitis in an adult female. Our evaluation of immune competence, including gamma interferon (IFN-gamma) and interleukin-12 (IL-12) signaling, found no evid...

immunocompromised patients, including those with congenital or acquired immunodeficiency disease, those receiving immunosuppressive drugs, and transplant patients. Cytomegalovirus in immunocompetent patients is an uncommon clinical entity. We describe the first such case reported in Taiwan. Since immunocompetent patients with CMV colitis are very rare, we review the medical literature on their ...

A voriconazole-resistant isolate of Aspergillus fumigatus was recovered from an immunocompetent patient receiving long-term antifungal therapy for cerebral aspergillosis. A G448S amino acid substitution in the azole target (Cyp51A) was identified as the cause of the resistance phenotype. This article describes the first isolation of a voriconazole-resistant A. fumigatus isolate from an immunoco...

Gastrointestinal infection with cytomegalovirus (CMV) is usually found in immunocompromised patients and rarely affects immunocompetent subjects. We describe two immunocompetent patients who had primary CMV infection, and in both the disease was associated with ulcerative colitis. Both patients recovered from the CMV infection spontaneously.

Acquired toxoplasmosis is more frequently an unrecognized disease. Immunocompetent adults and adolescents with primary infection are generally asymptomatic, or symptoms observed may include malaise, fever, and lymphadenopathy. In contrast, immunocompromised patients may experience severe manifestation including encephalitis and multi system organ failure. We report a case of toxoplasmic hepatit...

A case of thoracic vertebral osteomyelitis due to Salmonella enteritidis phage type 2 in an immunocompetent patient is reported. The patient initially presented with abdominal, urinary and chest symptoms, which were followed by a large pleural effusion. The infection was successfully treated with ciprofloxacin. This is the only case of salmonella thoracic vertebral osteomyelitis in an immunocom...

Human cysticercosis caused by Taenia crassiceps tapeworm larvae involves the muscles and subcutis mostly in immunocompromised patients and the eye in immunocompetent persons. We report a successfully treated cerebellar infection in an immunocompetent woman. We developed serologic tests, and the parasite was identified by histologic examination and 12s rDNA PCR and sequencing.
