Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia with or without thrombosis has been recognized increasingly as a serious complication of heparin use. This article reviews type II heparin-induced thrombocytopenia, which is mediated by an antibody that in most cases has specificity for a complex between heparin and platelet factor 4, a secreted platelet alpha-granule protein. The antibody-heparin-platelet facto...

Ma Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia is a profoundly dangerous, potentially lethal, immunologically mediated adverse drug reaction to unfractionated heparin or, less commonly, to low–molecular weight heparin. In this comprehensive review, the authors highlight heparin-induced thrombocytopenia’s risk factors, clinical presentation, pathophysiology, diagnostic principles, and treatment. The author...

occupy FcγIIa receptors, found on the cell surface of platelets, thereby activating the platelets and causing further expression of PF4 in a positive feedback loop mechanism (Figure 1).4 Platelet activation also causes the release of prothrombotic microparticles, platelet consumption, and thrombocytopenia. Activated platelet aggregation and their removal from circulation are believed to be resp...

Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) is a clinical immune-mediated syndrome; symptoms of HIT result from the development of arterial and venous thrombosis and are correlated with the severity of the thrombocytopenia. In all patients receiving heparin preparations in intensive care units, platelet counts should be monitored every 2-3 days throughout therapy, particularly during days 4-14 when ...

Each year, 25% of all hospitalized patients are affected by venous thromboembolism, a disease comprising deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, that is responsible for up to 10% of all inpatient deaths (Alikhan, Peters, Wilmott, Cohen, 2004). Used in both the treatment and the prevention of venous thromboembolism, heparin is administered to more than 12 million patients each year in the U...

A case of carbamazepine-induced thrombocytopenia is reported. The patient, a 38-year-old female, developed thrombocytopenia 10 days after receiving 400 mg carbamazepine daily. The presence of an anti-IgG carbamazepine-dependent platelet-reactive antibody was documented. Using flow cytometry, the drug-induced antibody was detected at a drug concentration as low as 10(-6) M.

Thrombocytopenia is an uncommon but potentially life threatening complication of certain anti-tubercular drugs and is characterized by rapid destruction of platelets whenever an offending drug is taken by a susceptible person. Here is a case report of Rifampicin induced Thrombocytopenia. This case is being reported for purpose of its rare occurrence and documentation.
