This paper addresses the question of computationally inexpensive yet discriminative and robust feature sets for real-world face recognition. The proposed descriptor named Patterns of Oriented Edge Magnitudes (POEM) has desirable properties: POEM (1) is an oriented, spatial multi-resolution descriptor capturing rich information about the original image; (2) is a multi-scale self-similarity based...
BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIM Per oral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) is a complex technique used in achalasia. Preclinical training is essential but little is known about the number of procedures needed. The aim of this study was to determine the number of procedures required to master POEM in an animal model. PATIENTS AND METHODS This prospective comparative study was conducted in two swine models at...
The Odyssey is a poem of paradoxes. Its central hero is both poet and liar, hero and trickster, emphatically famous and notoriously anonymous, endowed with a ravenous belly, yet capable of extreme fasting. The poem itself provides a narrative context entirely worthy of such ambiguity. Hailed by many for its self-reflexive narrative sophistication, it resorts nonetheless to primitive folktales f...
BACKGROUND/AIMS The motility change after peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) in achalasia is currently focused on lower esophageal sphincter (LES). This study aims to investigate the correlation of motility response between distal and proximal esophagus after POEM. METHODS A total of 32 achalasia patients who received POEM and high-resolution manometry (HRM) were included for analysis. Eckardt...
Intertextuality, introduced following linguistic researches in the West, is a newly coined term that refers to an old notion and was previously known in terms like: citation, adaptation, borrowing and mimesis. Most of the Muslim poets have been inspired by Quran since it has always been a source of inspiration for them, opening new horizons in front of their eyes. Thus, using Quranic verses has...
Poetic analysis involves the explication of a poem by focusing on the process of semiosis in it. Through semiosis linguistic meaning is transformed into stylistic meaning. An examination of semiosis brings us to look at the hypersemanticized poetic structures which are none other than the style features of a poem. Since style functions in a literary text by conveying meanings other than literal...
We propose a machine learning method for recognizing modern Arabic poems based on the common poetic features of modern Arabic poetry. The poetic features include: rhyming, repetition, use of diacritics and punctuations, and text alignment. The method can classify text documents as poem or non-poem documents with a very high accuracy of 99.81%.

We present the implementation of the trace theory in a new model checking tool framework, POEM, that has a strong emphasis on Partial Order Methods. A tree structure is used to store trace systems, which allows sharing common prefixes among traces and therefore, reduces memory cost. This structure is easy to extend to incorporate additional features. Two applications are shown in the paper: An ...
