In mice injected intravenously with Candida albicans, administration of anti-interleukin-18 (IL-18) antibodies increased the yeast load in the kidneys. There was no effect on the organ load with Candida when gamma interferon (IFN-gamma)-deficient mice were treated with anti-IL-18 antibodies, suggesting that the protective effect of IL-18 is mediated through endogenous IFN-gamma.

Background Tuberculosis (TB) is a global health problem. Immune response through CD4+ and CD8+ T cells is needed to produce Interferon gamma (IFN-γ), a cytokine eliminate Mycobacterium tuberculosis. We aimed to compare the cellular immune response based on the percentage of CD4+ and CD8+ T cells expressing interferon gamma in active pulmonary tuberculosis patients before and after 2 months of t...

Macrophage-mediated inhibition of mitochondrial respiration in EMT-6 murine mammary adenocarcinoma cells can be mimicked in vitro by treatment of the cells with interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) in combination with tumor necrosis factor, interleukin-1, or lipopolysaccharide. Conditioned supernatants obtained from activated macrophages appear to contain interferon-gamma, suggesting that inhibition of...

Gamma interferon (IFN-gamma) is a cytokine which plays a critical role in resistance to Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection. While T lymphocytes and natural killer cells are a major source of IFN-gamma, previous demonstrations that it can be produced by murine macrophages prompted us to examine the capacity of human alveolar macrophages to express IFN-gamma. Here we report that in vitro infect...

After viral bronchiolitis at an early age, Brown Norway (BN) rats develop chronic airway dysfunction consisting of inflammation, remodeling, episodic reversible obstruction, and hyperresponsiveness. We hypothesized that supplementation of interferon gamma (IFN-gamma) during viral illness would alter the inflammatory response and attenuate the postviral sequelae. Weanling rats were treated daily...

A newly described member of the platelet factor 4 family of cytokine genes, mig, is selectively induced by interferon gamma (IFN-gamma), and not IFN-alpha, in the mouse macrophage-like cell line RAW 264.7. Treatment of RAW 264.7 cells with IFN-gamma activated mig gene transcription as determined by nuclear run-on assays. mig genomic clones were isolated, and constructs containing genomic fragme...

Tuberculosis (TB) cellular immune responses were examined in the breast milk of human immunodeficiency virus infected mothers using the T-SPOT. TB interferon-gamma release assay (IGRA). Positive TB interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) responses were detected in 6 of 8 (75%) valid breast milk assays. Among 7 mothers with paired breast milk and blood assays, TB IFN-γ responses were higher in breast milk than...

The murine immune interferon (IFN-gamma) gene was cloned and expressed under control of the simian virus 40 early promoter in the monkey COS-1 cell line. A protein is secreted from these cells having the biological, antigenic, and biochemical characteristics of natural murine IFN-gamma. Cloned murine IFN-gamma cDNAs were obtained by using RNA from both mitogen-induced murine spleens and the tra...

Interferon (IFN)-gamma, a key immunoregulatory cytokine, has been thought to be produced solely by activated T cells and natural killer cells. In this study, we show that murine bone marrow- derived macrophages (BMMPhi) secrete large amounts of IFN-gamma upon appropriate stimulation. Although interleukin (IL)-12 and IL-18 alone induce low levels of IFN-gamma mRNA transcripts, the combined stimu...

Interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) is the only member of type II IFN and is vital in the regulation of immune and inflammatory responses. Herein we report the cloning, expression, and sequence analysis of IFN-gamma from the giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca). The open reading frame of this gene is 501 base pair in length and encodes a polypeptide consisting of 166 amino acids. All conserved N-linke...
