Animals and humans make decisions based on their expected outcomes. Since relevant outcomes are often delayed, perceiving delays and choosing between earlier vs. later rewards (intertemporal decision-making) is an essential component of animal behavior. The myriad observations made in experiments studying intertemporal decision-making and time perception have not yet been rationalized within a ...
A comparison between Tsallis' statistics-based and generalized quasi-hyperbolic discount models in humans. In this paper it is shown that the intratemporal and intertemporal preferences of each decision maker in the household can be identified even if individual consumption is not observed. This identification result is used jointly with the Consumer Expenditure Survey (CEX) to estimate the intratemporal and intertemporal features of individual preferences. This paper is one of the first attempts to...
Two central concerns in the sustainability debate are the weight given to the needs of future generations and the application of the precautionary principle. In an economic model, these aspects of intertemporal evaluation can be mapped into time preference and intertemporal risk aversion. The current analysis points out a close link between these different aspects of intertemporal evaluation fr...
Human beings are sure to die but do not know when they will die. This paper proposes a general formulation of life cycle theory that accounts for these two fundamental aspects of human life. We stress in particular the role of intertemporal correlation aversion which it is a key concept to understand the role of mortality risks in intertemporal choices.
We explain strategic piracy in the software industry as a result of the presence of learning costs in the context of intertemporal price discrimination. First, piracy can be a means to incite consumers to invest in human capital, which increases their propensity to pay and enables the firm to raise prices. Second, the presence of piracy induces a more efficient intertemporal price discrimination.

There have been many currency crises during the postwar era (see Kaminsky and Reinhart, 1999). A currency crisis is an episode in which the exchange rate depreciates substantially during a short period of time. There is an extensive literature on the causes and consequences of a currency crisis in a country with a fixed or heavily managed exchange rate. The models in this literature are often c...
