The laboratory transmission to animals of an apparently degenerative disease of the nervous system, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), is now well established. Important questions arising from this observation are the possibility of natural transmission or infectivity and the existence of other similarly transmissible diseases. Epidemiological studies have revealed some possible clusters of CJD a...
This CHMP position statement replaces the CHMP position statement on Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and plasma-derived and urine-derived medicinal products (EMEA/CPMP/BWP/2879/02/rev 1). CHMP position statement on Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and plasma-derived and urine-derived medicinal products
We report the presence of infectivity in erythrocytes, leukocytes, and plasma of 1 person with variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and in the plasma of 2 in 4 persons whose tests were positive for sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. The measured infectivity levels were comparable to those reported in various animals with transmissible spongiform encephalopathies.
OBJECTIVE To identify cases of inherited prion diseases in Britain and to assess their phenotypic features. DESIGN Screening study of patients suspected clinically to have Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and other neurodegenerative diseases by prion protein gene analysis. SETTING Biochemical research department. SUBJECTS Patients suspected to have Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and other neurodegene...
Movement disorders presenting with parkinsonism may share histopathological features with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, a spongiform encephalopathy caused by the accumulation of pathological prion protein in brain. To investigate a possible aetiological link between these conditions and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, histoblot immunostaining for pathological prion protein was carried out in 90 cases i...
Human prion disease is known as new variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), prion protein is not virus, but a special protein which is infectious (protinactious infectious particles, PRION). Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease is a group of infectious prion protein caused by sporadic, dominantly inherited, transmissible neurodegenerative disease, which is characterized by pathologic spongy degeneration ...
BACKGROUND Involvement of the peripheral nervous system in the pathogenesis of prion diseases is becoming increasingly evident. However, pathologic protease-resistant prion protein deposition in the peripheral nerves of patients with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease has never been demonstrated, to our knowledge. OBJECTIVE To determine whether mutated prion protein accumulation could be shown in the ...
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis was once thought to be caused by persistent viral infection, partly because some patients with transmissible Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease showed prominent amyotrophy. However, in the past 15 years there has been little interest in the amyotrophy in prion diseases, and the possible link to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis has been eschewed. We analyzed case reports of pri...
