One of the most common areas of ceramic bracket fracture is within the tie-wing complex. When an archwire is ligated into position, tensile forces are placed under the tie wing. However, no study, to date, has focused specifically on the fracture resistance of the tie-wing complex. The aim of this study is to compare the tensile fracture strength of seven currently available ceramic brackets (I...

PURPOSE Bone drilling is a major part of orthopaedic surgery performed during the internal fixation of fractured bones. At present, information related to drilling force, drilling torque, rate of drill-bit penetration and drill-bit rotational speed is not available to orthopaedic surgeons, clinicians and researchers as bone drilling is performed manually. METHODS This study demonstrates that ...

We have reviewed 16 patients with avulsion fractures of the tibial tubercle, mostly boys who sustained left-sided injuries during sport. Two-thirds had type I or II injuries and were treated conservatively. Fractures involving the knee joint (type III) had internal fixation. The final results were good except for minor complications such as a prominent and uncomfortable tibial tubercle.

A total of 20 racehorses with longitudinal fractures underwent internal fixation surgery under sevoflurane anesthesia combined with infusion of medetomidine (3 µg/kg/hr) alone (10 horses, group M) or medetomidine and fentanyl (7 µg/kg/hr) (10 horses, group FM). In group FM, the end-tidal sevoflurane concentration during surgery was maintained significantly lower than in group M (2.8-2.9% for gr...

We report a C2 tear-drop fracture of a 69-year-old patient which occurred after a fall. Although tear drop fractures of the subaxial cervical spine mostly develop due to a flexion type injury, the mechanism is often compressive hyperextension injury at the C2 vertebra. Rigid external stabilization and internal fixation are the treatment alternatives. Internal fixation may be performed using the...

We report a prospective, randomised, controlled trial of 50 severely displaced comminuted Colles' fractures treated by either external fixation or manipulation and plaster. Each patient was assessed radiographically throughout treatment, and functionally by an independent observer at three and six months. The functional result correlated with the anatomical result, which was significantly bette...

AIM To compare the outcomes between the use of resorbable plates and screws and the conventional methods in children with paediatric maxillofacial fractures. MATERIALS AND METHODS STUDY DESIGN a retrospective observational study was designed reviewing the clinical records from June 2007 and June 2011. Data collected included aepidemiological data, type of treatment, outcome and satisfactio...

We report a new intermaxillary fixation (IMF) method for condylar fractures using a thermoforming plate. Fifteen cases of condylar fracture were selected and thermoforming plates were applied. The patient's recover was uneventful in all 15 cases, and the period of IMF ranged from 7 to 17 days, (mean 12) for the following 7 days IMF was used only at night together with functional jaw training du...

BACKGROUND Surgical treatment of fracture mandible using an internal fixation has changed in the last decades to achieve the required rigidity, stability and immediate restoration of function. The aim of the study was to do a Prospective study of 10 patients to determine the efficacy of rectangular grid compression miniplates in mandibular fractures. MATERIALS & METHODS This study was carried...

Between 1996 and 2000, we treated ten patients with severely comminuted fractures of the radial head using low-profile mini-plates. Their mean age was 42 years (24 to 71). Three fractures were Mason type III and seven were Mason-Johnston type IV. At a mean follow-up of 28.5 months (15 to 44), all fractures had united. The plates were removed in nine patients. No patient had difficulty with dail...
