BACKGROUND Extensive quantities of keratinic by-products are disposed annually by animal-processing industry, causing a mounting ecological problem due to extreme resilience of these materials to enzymatic breakdown. There is a growing trend to apply cheap and environment-friendly methods to recycle keratinic wastes. Soil bacteria of profound keratinolytic potential, especially spore-forming ro...
Dehairing is one of the highly polluting operations in the leather industry. The conventional lime-sulfide process used for dehairing produces large amounts of sulfide, which poses serious toxicity and disposal problems. This operation also involves hair destruction, a process that leads to increased chemical oxygen demand (COD), biological oxygen demand (BOD), and total suspended solid (TSS) l...
Dermatophytes can digest keratin and other proteinaceous substrates present in skin and its appendages such as nail, hair, and feather and use it as its sole source of carbon and nitrogen. Proteolytic and keratinolytic activities of dermatophytes have been a subject of interest for several years to understand the pathogenicity of infection. In this study we intend to elucidate the keratinase ac...
The complete genome sequence of Chryseobacterium camelliae Dolsongi-HT1 is reported here. C. camelliae Dolsongi-HT1, having keratinolytic activity, was isolated from green tea leaves in the Dolsongi tea garden in Jeju, South Korea. The strain Dolsongi-HT1 has 28 candidate protease genes, which may be utilized in further studies and industrial applications of keratinase.
Dermatophytes are keratinophilic fungi and the causative agent of dermatophytosis in animals people. In pathogenesis this disease, enzymes such as DNase, gelatinase, lipase, keratinase, elastase, collagenase highlighted. This work aimed to verify production these by clinical environmental isolates dermatophytes. Environmental strains were obtained Vanbreuseghem technique (1952), using soil samp...
Feathers are the most prevalent agricultural waste generated by chicken farms, polluting environment and wasting protein resources as a result of accumulation large amounts feathers. Therefore, keratinase-producing microorganisms represent promising potential technique for degradation feather waste. Streptomyces netropsis A-ICA Bacillus subtilis ALICA, previously isolated from rhizosphere deser...
A novel thermophilic, anaerobic, keratinolytic bacterium designated KD-1 was isolated from grassy marshland. Strain KD-1 was a spore-forming rod with a Gram-positive type cell wall, but stained Gram-negative. The temperature, pH, and NaCl concentration range necessary for growth was 30-65 °C (optimum 55 °C), 6.0-10.5 (optimum 8.0-8.5), and 0-6% (optimum 0.2%) (w/v), respectively. Strain KD-1 po...
Strain T1E, isolated and identified as Brevibacillus thermoruber, and evolutionally distant from the known keratinolytic isolates, proved to have feather-degrading ability. During the 7-day fermentation period, T1E consumed 10 g/l native goose feathers as the sole source of carbon and energy at 50 degrees C under aerobic conditions. The isolate secreted a thermostable, keratinolytic protease, w...
