An optical clockwork is created with a compact 1-GHz repetition-rate laser and three nonlinear crystals. The broadband continuum output of the laser covers sufficient bandwidth to provide direct access to its carrier-envelope offset frequency without the use of a microstructure fiber. We phase lock the femtosecond comb to a Ca optical standard and monitor the stability of the repetition rate, f...

Regarding the laser-driven acceleration of charged particles in photonic systems, a central unmet challenge is the achievement of simultaneous transverse and longitudinal stability at nonultrarelativistic energies. At such energies, Earnshaw's theorem [S. Earnshaw, Trans. Cambridge Philos. Soc. 7, 97 (1842)] indicates that a synchronous accelerating wave gives a defocusing effect. We present a ...

Continous Wave Operation and Mode-Locking of Ti:Sapph Lasers Michael Meehan Department of Physics and Astronomy, BYU Bachelor of Science Titanium-sapphire lasers are useful in condensed matter research because of their ability to be mode-locked, generating ultrafast, regular pulses of coherent radiation. When designing Ti:sapph lasers, their stability in continous wave (CW) operation is often o...

Semiconductor lasers are ideal sources for efficient electrical-to-optical power conversion and for many applications where their small size and potential for low cost are required to meet market demands. Yellow lasers find use in a variety of bio-related applications, such as photocoagulation, imaging, flow cytometry, and cancer treatment. However, direct generation of yellow light from semico...

Purpose. To evaluate the long-term efficacy, accuracy, stability, and safety of hyperopic laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) using a 213 nm wavelength solid-state laser. Methods. This prospective noncomparative case series consisted of 34 eyes of 17 patients which underwent hyperopic LASIK using a 213 nm solid-state laser (Pulzar Z1, CustomVis) at an outpatient refractive surgery center in Ma...

We have designed and tested a laser-diode-pumped monolithic Nd:YAG oscillator. The electrical-to-optical slope efficiency was 6.5%. The frequency jitter was less than 10 kHz over a 0.3-sec period, the best frequency stability reported for a Nd:YAG laser to date.

We report on a narrowband 5 W cw fiber laser incorporating a point-by-point fiber Bragg grating inscribed into the core of a Yb(3+)-doped double-clad fiber. The laser featured excellent long-term wavelength and power stability (0.3%), as well as a very narrow (15 pm) linewidth, when passive temperature stabilization of the grating was implemented.

A frequency-doubled and frequency-stabilized ring Nd:YAP laser with a six-mirror cavity is demonstrated. This laser satisfies both the thermal insensitivity and optimal frequency-doubling conditions. A second-harmonic output to 1 W at 0.54 mum is achieved. The intensity fluctuation is less than ?1.5% and the frequency stability is better than ?1 MHz (5 min).

We have achieved a stability of 3 10 13 1=2 for 3 < < 30 s with a laser-pumped rubidium gas-cell frequency standard by reducing the effects due to noise in the microwave and laser sources. This result is one order of magnitude better than the best present performance of lamp-pumped devices.
