Spinal glial reactivity has been strongly implicated in pain that follows peripheral nerve injury. Among the many therapeutic agents that have been tested for anti-allodynia through immune modulation is the atypical methylxanthine propentofylline. While propentofylline shows a potent anti-allodynia effect after nerve transection injury, we here demonstrate that, when propentofylline is used int...

Allodynia is the sensation of pain due to non-painful stimuli. It usually occurs due to destructive lesions of the spinal cord or peripheral nerves. Allodynia following intradural lipoma surgery has been reported previously. We herein report a case of allodynia developed after microsurgical caudal lipoma excision without associated spinal cord injury.

The use of multiple loose ligations of the rat sciatic nerve has been proposed as a model for the study of allodynia and hyperalgesia. This pain hypersensitivity results from both an increase in the peripheral and central sensitization. The evidence indicating that the development of neuropathic thermal hyperalgesia and mechanical allodynia requires activation of spinal cord NMDA receptors. NMD...

Cardiac auto-regulation involves integrated regulatory loops linking electrics and mechanics in the heart. Whereas mechanical activity is usually seen as 'the endpoint' of cardiac auto-regulation, it is important to appreciate that the heart would not function without feed-back from the mechanical environment to cardiac electrical (mechano-electric coupling, MEC) and mechanical (mechano-mechani...

OBJECTIVE Most migraineurs develop cutaneous allodynia during migraines, and many have cutaneous sensitization between attacks. Atypical pain modulation via the descending pain system may contribute to this sensitization and allodynia. The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that compared with non-allodynic migraineurs, allodynic migraineurs have atypical periaqueductal gray (PAG...

Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-A mRNA was previously identified as one of the significantly upregulated transcripts in spinal cord injured tissue from adult rats that developed allodynia. To characterize the role of VEGF-A in the development of pain in spinal cord injury (SCI), we analyzed mechanical allodynia in SCI rats that were treated with either vehicle, VEGF-A isoform 165 (VEG...

We tested the ability of lithium (Li(+)) to block heat hyperalgesia, cold allodynia, mechanical allodynia and mechanical hyperalgesia in rats experimentally subjected to painful peripheral neuropathy. Chronic constrictive injury (CCI) to the sciatic nerve induced persistent hyperalgesia and allodynia. Intrathecal injection of Li(+) (2.5-40 micromol) into the region of lumbar enlargement dose-de...

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of colchicine-induced microtubule depolymerization on allodynia in rats with chronic compression of the dorsal root ganglion (DRG) (CCD) and the effect of colchicine on transient receptor potential vanilloid 4 (TRPV4). Intrathecal administration of the anti-microtubule agent, colchicine, resulted in a dose-dependent and partial reduction in CC...
