Staphylococcus aureus is the main cause of surgical site infection (SSI) after major heart surgery (MHS), with the patient's endogenous flora as the principal source. However, the influence of nasal carriage of S. aureus on the development of SSI after MHS has not been established and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines do not make a recommendation for or against decolonisatio...

OBJECTIVE The objective of this study is to evaluate the patterns of nasal colonization of Staphylococcus aureus and its susceptibility patterns among medical students before and after their rotations in the hospital. METHODS Nasal swabs were obtained from 128 medical students for microbiological study and susceptibility testing prior to working in the hospital (the first), following the firs...

BACKGROUND Staphylococcus aureus is a common human pathogen that can colonise the respiratory tract and cause infection. Here we investigate the risk factors associated with nasopharyngeal carriage of S. aureus (including methicillin-resistant S. aureus [MRSA]) in Vietnam. METHODS Between February and June 2012, nasal and pharyngeal swabs for S. aureus culture, and demographic and socioeconom...

Background: Nasal carriage of Staphylococcus aureus has a key role in the epidemiology and pathogenesis of infection. In this study we aimed to investigate the occurrence of the methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA )and mecA gene among healthy primary school boys in north of Iran.Material and methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted from January 2017 to July 2017 in Sari l...

Staphylococcus aureus nasal carriage is a significant risk factor for the epidemic staphylococcal infection in hospitals; however, few data are available for Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City. To measure the nasal carriage of S. aureus and methicillin-resistant S. aureus in ENT patients, two hundred seventy patients were screened for nasal swabs. The isolates were identified as S. aureus by routine ...

BACKGROUND Nasal carriage of Staphylococcus aureus plays an important role in the pathogenesis of staphylococcal infections. Anterior nasal region is a primary origin of S. aureus. In longitudinal studies, three types of S. aureus nasal carriers can be distinguished: persistent carriers, intermittent or transient carriers, and noncarriers. OBJECTIVES This study was designed to determine the d...

Staphylococci are still a leading cause of hospital infection. The success of nasal mupirocin for the control of epidemic methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (EMRSA), the prevention of colonization of central venous cannulae, and the prevention of septicaemia in haemodialysis patients should encourage the use of minimal dose regimens to minimize the emergence of mupirocin resistance. Mu...

The relationship between nasal Staphylococcus aureus carriage and lower respiratory tract infections was studied in 16 critically ill patients. S. aureus strains from nasal and bronchial samples were characterized by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis. In all but one case, nasal and bronchial strains were genetically identical in the same patients.

BACKGROUND Human nares colonized with Staphylococcus aureus are the most important reservoir for this pathogen. We studied the influence of sex and hormonal contraceptive use on persistent S. aureus nasal carriage. METHODS We conducted a cohort study in healthy volunteers and determined carriage status at baseline and again at follow-up by using the results of 2 swab samples at each time poin...
