BACKGROUND We have previously demonstrated aerosol delivery during conventional and high frequency oscillatory (HFOV) ventilation using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in piglets. There are no reports on aerosol delivery during high frequency jet ventilation (HFJV). OBJECTIVE To compare delivery of aerosolized gadopentetate dimeglumine (Gd-DTPA) in 3 neonatal ventilator circuits: convention...

Introduction Modern neonatal practice has improved the outcome of extremely preterm infants. However, why some infants require prolonged periods of respiratory support while others improve after a short period of mechanical ventilation, remains largely speculative. Many risk factors, including barotrauma or volutrauma due to mechanical ventilation, oxygen toxicity, and infection, have been iden...

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the incidence, etiology, outcome, and predictors of mortality in neonates with Acute Renal Failure (ARF) in an out born Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of India. METHODS A retrospective analysis of case records of out born neonates, who had ARF at admission or developed ARF during NICU stay, from January to December 2011 (one year) was done. FINDINGS Out of the tot...

The last decade has seen increased appreciation of ventilator-induced lung injury. The understanding that the process of mechanical ventilation can itself damage lungs has spurned the search for ventilation strategies that are more lung protective. High-frequency oscillatory ventilation is a mode of high-frequency ventilation that may accomplish all of the current goals of lung protection. Hist...

INTRODUCTION Nosocomial infections are a major and a frequent problem in neonatal intensive care units and increase morbidity, mortality, and costs. The objective of this study was to identify the risk factors associated with nosocomial infections in a neonatal intensive care unit. METHODS Nested case control study. Records from patients were registered: gestational age, sex, birth weight, ce...

conclusions the results of this study show that the incidence of nosocomial infection in neonates is high and decreasing the risk factors such as prematurity, mechanical ventilation and reducing invasive procedures can decrease the infection and improve rapid recovery in these neonates. patients and methods this cross-sectional retrospective study was performed during an 18- month period (2012 ...

BACKGROUND Mechanical ventilation is a therapeutic action for newborns with respiratory diseases but may have side effects. Correct equipment knowledge and training may limit human errors. We aimed to test different neonatal mechanical ventilators' performances by an acquisition module (a commercial pressure sensor plus an isolated chamber and a dedicated software). METHODS The differences (Δ...

This report describes a massive pulmonary lymphatic cystic anomaly affecting the right lower lobe of a nine-year-old boy. A year earlier, only an ill-defined small infiltrate could be seen in the affected lobe radiologically. The pathogenesis of this highly unusual lesion is discussed, taking into consideration the possible role of three months of mechanical ventilation in the neonatal period.

Lung injury remains an important cause of morbidity among newborns who require assisted ventilation. Studies in immature animal models of respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) have shown that positivepressure ventilation with large tidal volumes damages pulmonary capillary endothelium, alveolar and airway epithelium, and basement membranes. This mechanical damage results in leakage of fluid, prot...

Abstract Introduction: Changing position is an important aspect within nursing care. Prone positioning amongst premature infants could improve their oxygenation compared to supine position. Side lying position leads to developed support between premature infants, however there is few studies about effects of this position on premature infants 'oxygenation. Objective: This study was conduc...
