The PhD dissertation was carried out at the Eye Pathology Institute, University of Copenhagen, and the Department of Ophthalmology, Rigshospitalet, Copenhagen University Hospital. The aim was to investigate tumours of the optic nerve in a known population. Therefore, we studied all surgically removed tumours of the optic nerve in Denmark during a study period of 25 years. Furthermore, in order ...

Glaucoma represents a group of neurodegenerative diseases characterized by structural damage to the optic nerve and the slow, progressive death of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs). Elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) is traditionally considered to be the most important risk factor for glaucoma, and treatment options for the disease have hitherto been limited to its reduction. However, visual field...

PURPOSE Macular schisis or detachment is frequently observed in eyes with optic pits or colobomas. Although spontaneous resolution of the maculopathy has been reported, concurrent changes in the optic nerve coloboma have not. We report three cases of atypical optic nerve colobomas in which dynamic optic nerve changes coincide with the development and subsequent resolution of the associated macu...

Various cysts associated with intraorbital and intracranial portions of the optic nerve have been described. Arachnoid cysts of the optic nerve in association with optic nerve glioma were described by Wolter and McKenney (I964); Holt (I966) described two cases of cysts of the intracranial portion of the optic nerve, and Smith, Hoyt, and Newton (I969) also described cysts of the anterior third o...

A case is reported of an optic nerve glioma with a marked degree of arachnoid hyperplasia which was initially diagnosed as an optic nerve meningioma. Hyperplasia of the arachnoid was also the underlying cause for expansion of the optic canal. The relationship between arachnoid hyperplasia in optic nerve glioma and meningioma of the optic nerve sheath in childhood is discussed.

BACKGROUND In clinical practice, the differentiation of glaucomatous from non-glaucomatous cupping can be difficult, even for experienced observers. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the role of optical coherence tomography (OCT) in differentiating glaucomatous from non-glaucomatous optic nerve cupping in a cross-sectional pilot study. METHODS Eleven consecutive patients presenting to...

A 52-year-old man presented with an anterior communicating artery aneurysm associated with splitting, penetration, and visual symptoms of the optic nerve and manifesting as sudden onset of severe headache. Angiography disclosed a 10-mm anterior communicating artery aneurysm projecting supero-posteriorly, and operative findings revealed unexpected splitting of the optic nerve. Moreover, the opti...

to improve visual disturbance, optic nerve decompression can be performed via transcranial or tran-sphenoidal approaches. although the surgical exposure in transcranial approach is favourable, yet the optic nerve's presence in the field may make it vulnerable to damage. of fighty patients with different types of pituitary adenomas, 35 cases with medium-sized (1-3 cm) tumors have been studi...

Introduction: We aimed to dosimetrically compare three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3D-CRT) and volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) in terms of planning target volume (PTV) coverage, organ at risk (OAR) sparing, and conformity index (CI). Material and Methods: Planning data of 26 high grade glioma (HGG) patients were used. Prescrib...

Objective: To provide rationale for the clinical application of endoscopic optic nerve decompression based on anatomical and imaging studies. Methods: The anatomy of optic nerve canal and its adjacent structures of 20 facial sides of human cadaver heads were examined by multislice spiral CT scanning and imaging workstations. Anatomical and imaging measurements were compared. Results: The follow...
