PURPOSE The defining feature of glaucoma is excavation of the optic nerve head; however, the mechanism of this loss of tissue is not well understood. We recently discovered a copy number variation upstream of matrix metalloproteinase 19 (MMP19) in a large, autosomal dominant pedigree with a congenital malformation of the optic disc called cavitary optic disc anomaly (CODA). Patients with CODA h...

Both peripheral displacement thresholds and measurement of optic disc parameters have been advocated in the early diagnosis of glaucoma at the stage before scotomata are detected on conventional visual field assessment. The peripheral movement displacement thresholds were measured in 50 eyes of 50 patients with ocular hypertension and a significant correlation was found with neuroretinal rim ar...

In multiple sclerosis, microstructural damage of normal-appearing brain tissue is an important feature of its pathology. Understanding these mechanisms is vital to help develop neuroprotective strategies. The visual pathway is a key model to study mechanisms of damage and recovery in demyelination. Anterograde trans-synaptic degeneration across the lateral geniculate nuclei has been suggested a...

PURPOSE To investigate optic nerve degeneration associated with CLN3 deficiency in a murine model of juvenile neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (Batten disease). METHODS Using light and electron microscopy, the density and diameter of axons and the thickness of myelin in optic nerve were compared between age-matched cln3 knock-out (cln3-/-) and wild-type (129ev/TAC) mice. Western blot analysis w...

The PhD dissertation was carried out at the Eye Pathology Institute, University of Copenhagen, and the Department of Ophthalmology, Rigshospitalet, Copenhagen University Hospital. The aim was to investigate tumours of the optic nerve in a known population. Therefore, we studied all surgically removed tumours of the optic nerve in Denmark during a study period of 25 years. Furthermore, in order ...

PURPOSE Macular schisis or detachment is frequently observed in eyes with optic pits or colobomas. Although spontaneous resolution of the maculopathy has been reported, concurrent changes in the optic nerve coloboma have not. We report three cases of atypical optic nerve colobomas in which dynamic optic nerve changes coincide with the development and subsequent resolution of the associated macu...

BASIC CONSIDERATIONS Optic atrophy is a misleading term which, embedded by tradition and usage, resists precise definition. It is used when there is excessive pallor of the optic disc and is thus a physical sign and not a diagnosis. Since there are many causes of optic pallor, the term is usually reserved for those cases in which there is associated visual defect, either of fields or acuity, in...

Various cysts associated with intraorbital and intracranial portions of the optic nerve have been described. Arachnoid cysts of the optic nerve in association with optic nerve glioma were described by Wolter and McKenney (I964); Holt (I966) described two cases of cysts of the intracranial portion of the optic nerve, and Smith, Hoyt, and Newton (I969) also described cysts of the anterior third o...

A case is reported of an optic nerve glioma with a marked degree of arachnoid hyperplasia which was initially diagnosed as an optic nerve meningioma. Hyperplasia of the arachnoid was also the underlying cause for expansion of the optic canal. The relationship between arachnoid hyperplasia in optic nerve glioma and meningioma of the optic nerve sheath in childhood is discussed.
