This thesis investigates properties and applications of Holey Fibre (HF), a recent innovation in the field of optical waveguiding. HF is an all-silica optical fibre with a solid core surrounded by an array of air holes that provide a low-index cladding. The strong guidance of HF and the numerous degrees of freedom available in design give rise to novel properties, including the capability of si...

Diffusion MRI is an exquisitely sensitive probe of tissue microstructure, and is currently the only non-invasive measure of the brain's fibre architecture. As this technique becomes more sophisticated and microstructurally informative, there is increasing value in comparing diffusion MRI with microscopic imaging in the same tissue samples. This study compared estimates of fibre orientation disp...

A comprehensive study of the various modulation techniques has been discussed which helps to increase data rate, to overcome dispersion effects and various non-linear effects in the fibre. Modulation formats such as OOK (On Off Keying), BPSK (Binary Phase Shift Keying), DPSK (Differential Phase Shift Keying), DP-QPSK (Dual Polarized Quadrature Phase Shift Keying) and duobinary are studied. The ...

The impact of fiber Bragg grating induced dispersion on the performance of frequency interleaved WDM radio-over-fiber (RoF) links with OFDM signaling is assessed. A comparison is given for both uniform and quarter-cosine apodized gratings. The frequencyinterleaved optical signals are transported over 10-km-long standard single-mode fiber (SMF) in optical double-sideband (ODSB) format and filter...

in this paper the effects of transmittance, dispersion angle and diffusion length on the quantum efficiency of solar cells (qesc) have been simulated and investigated. optical path technic is used for simulation. the results show that base thickness, diffusion length, dispersion angle, number of optical confinement path and transmission angles have an extremely effects on the qesc. simulation r...

We have investigated the effects of ionizing radiation-induced changes on dispersion and refractive index in photonic crystal fibre, boron co-doped photosensitive fibre and standard SMF-28 fibre up to a level of 7 MGy of 60Co γ -radiation. We have been unable to observe any changes within an experimental error of ∼1% for the dispersion value and <1.5 × 10−3 for the refractive index.

In this paper, the performance of high speed optical fiber based network is analysed by using dispersion compensating module (DCM). The optimal operating condition of the DCM is obtained by considering dispersion management configurations for the symmetrical system i.e Pre-compensation & Post-compensation. The dispersion compensating fiber (DCF) is tested for a single span, single channel syste...

We review our recent progress on the realisation of pulse shaping in passively-mode-locked fibre lasers by inclusion of an amplitude and/or phase spectral filter into the laser cavity. We numerically show that depending on the amplitude transfer function of the in-cavity filter, various regimes of advanced waveform generation can be achieved, including ones featuring parabolic-, flat-topand tri...

We demonstrate a picosecond source of correlated photon pairs using a micro-structured fibre with zero dispersion around 715 nm wavelength. The fibre is pumped in the normal dispersion regime at ~708 nm and phase matching is satisfied for widely spaced parametric wavelengths. Here we generate up to 10;7 photon pairs per second in the fibre at wavelengths of 587 nm and 897 nm, while on collectin...
