Control of the disease is generally achieved by vaccination. In countries where sylvatic rabies exists, oral vaccination campaigns conducted with safe and efficient baits make possible the eradication of the disease. In countries where canine rabies is endemic, WHO recommends mass parenteral vacci nation campaigns of dogs and promotes, for dogs impossible to reach, the use of oral immunisation ...

Two novel oral DNA-based vaccines provide immune protection against breast cancer in mouse model systems. These vaccines are delivered by attenuated Salmonella typhimurium to secondary lymphoid organs and are directed against novel targets such as transcription factor Fos-related antigen 1 (Fra-1) and endoglin (CD105). Both vaccines elicit suppression of angiogenesis in the breast tumor vascula...

BACKGROUND The use of Salmonella to deliver heterologous antigens from DNA vaccines is a well-accepted extension of the success of oral Salmonella vaccines in animal models. Attenuated S. typhimurium and S. typhi strains are safe and efficacious, and their use to deliver DNA vaccines combines the advantages of both vaccine approaches, while complementing the limitations of each technology. An i...

Oral immunization of healthy adults with 10(7) CFU BCG Moreau Rio de Janeiro was well tolerated and significantly boosted gamma interferon responses to purified protein derivative, Ag85, and MPB70 from previous childhood intradermal BCG immunization. Oral BCG offers the possibility of a needle-free tuberculosis vaccine and of boosting the protective immunity from intradermal tuberculosis vaccines.

Currently, most vaccines are given by injection. However, due to the inherent problems associated with injections, other routes of drug delivery are being researched, among them, the oral route. So far, research into oral vaccination has not differentiated between vaccine uptake by the different parts of the gastro-intestinal tract, such as the small and large intestine. It is likely that follo...

Most vaccine assessments have occurred in well-nourished populations of higher socioeconomic status. However, vaccines are often used in populations with high incidences of malnutrition and infections, in whom the effectiveness of some vaccines is inferior for unknown reasons. The degree and extent of vaccine underperformance have not been systematically studied for most vaccines across differi...
