Factors other than low bone mass, such as changes in bone quality, may contribute to fracture risk. Non-enzymatic glycation alters bone’s organic matrix [1] and creates collagen crosslinks, collectively termed advanced glycation end products (AGEs) [2]. AGEs accumulation with age stiffens bone's organic matrix, ultimately leading to fracture [3]. Cell culture work in animal models shows increas...

Ambient wintertime background urban aerosol in Cork city, Ireland, was characterized using aerosol mass spectrometry. During the three-week measurement study in 2009, 93 % of the ca. 1 350 000 single particles characterized by an Aerosol Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometer (TSI ATOFMS) were classified into five organic-rich particle types, internally mixed to different proportions with elemental c...

Soil carbon and nitrogen contents play an important role in sustaining soil physical and chemical quality and help to have healthy environments. The continues conversion of rangelands to arable lands has the potential to change carbon and nitrogen sequestration. In this study to evaluate the effects of land use change on soil organic carbon and nitrogen stock, forty samples collected from north...

Stable 2-D metal-organic framework nanosheets were utilized as a superior clean-background matrix for MALDI-TOF MS analysis of small biomolecules and pollutants in both positive and negative ion modes. The matrix could unusually afford up to 1000 mM of the salt concentrations in the monitoring of the enzymatic hydrolysis of neurotransmitter acetylcholine.

Inorganic nanocomposites have been prepared by assembling colloidal nanocrystals and then replacing the organic ligands with precursors to an inorganic matrix phase. Separate synthesis and processing of the nanocrystal and matrix phases allows complete compositional modularity and retention of the superlattice morphologies for sphere (see scheme; top) or rod (bottom) assemblies.

The drug molecule Propranolol has been encapsulated by a sol-gel process in an organic-inorganic hybrid matrix by in-situ self-assembly; the 2D HETCOR solid state NMR spectroscopy provides direct proof of the intimate spatial relationship between the host matrix and guest drug molecules.

This paper reviews our current state of knowledge of the roles the small leucine-rich proteoglycans (SLRPs) play in the formation of connective tissue and mineralised tissue matrices. Both, the SLRPs biglycan and decorin are highly expressed in extracellular bone matrix and there is now substantial evidence to support an increasing role for biglycan and decorin in influencing bone cell differen...

Matrix effects like signal enhancement or suppression can severely compromise quantitative analysis of environmental samples with liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-MS). Several operational options were studied to reduce such matrix effects in the determination of polar organic trace contaminants from water, like non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, among ...

Marine teleost fish produce CaCO3 in their intestine as part of their osmoregulatory strategy. This precipitation is critical for rehydration and survival of the largest vertebrate group on earth, yet the molecular mechanisms that regulate this reaction are unknown. Here, we isolate and characterize an organic matrix associated with the intestinal precipitates produced by Gulf toadfish (Opsanus...
