CONTEXT When the liver function tests are aggravated after starting antithyroid drugs (ATDs) in Graves' hyperthyroidism, discontinuation of ATDs is generally considered. However, a question arises whether such aggravation constitutes an adverse effect of the drugs or not. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to clarify the influence of thyrotoxicosis on liver function tests, comparing the resu...

From the clinical point of view, hyperthyroidism is generally presented as diffuse hyperactivity of thyroid tissue induced by autoimmune stimulation (Graves’ disease), or as the consequence of one, or more hyperactive autonomous nodules (Plummer’s disease). These two entities are relatively perceivable in clinical routine. Thyroid scintigraphy of the patient with Graves’ disease, presents a pat...

PURPOSE To assess quality of life and depressive status in Korean patients with Graves' ophthalmopathy. METHODS A cross-sectional study of 49 patients (mean age, 41 years; sex ratio, M:F=11:38) with Graves' ophthalmopathy (referred to as the Graves' group) and 48 age-matched and sex-matched controls (mean age, 40.2 years; sex ratio, M:F=11:37) was performed using the Korean version of the 36-...

In this paper, we show that the piecewise linear finite element solution uh and the linear interpolation uI have superclose gradient for tetrahedral meshes, where most elements are obtained by dividing approximate parallelepiped into six tetrahedra. We then analyze a post-processing gradient recovery scheme, showing that the global L2 projection of ∇uh is a superconvergent gradient approximatio...

The combination of autoimmune Graves’ disease with a solitary hot thyroid nodule suppressing the remainder of the thyroid gland is rare. We report a case of Graves’ disease associated with a single hyperfunctioning nodule with suppression of the remaining gland. A 45 year old male patient with past medical history of autoimmune Graves’ disease with severe ophthalmopathy was referred to endocrin...

 A new change detection algorithm applying to SAR images of urban areas affected by earthquake is here presented. It relies on the inversion of deterministic scattering models fully describing the interactions between a rough ground and a canonical parallelepiped-shaped building.

We give exact bounds to the minimum volume of a parallelepiped whose spanning vectors are perturbations of the n unit vectors by vectors of length at most ǫ. This extends Micciancio’s recent sharp bounds to all possible values of ǫ. We also completely determine all possible perturbations with length at most ǫ that achieve this minimum volume.

Graves' disease is an autoimmune disease of the thyroid gland mediated by T cells. CD28, a member of costimulatory molecules, plays a pivotal role in regulating T-cell responses. Plasma-soluble CD28 is one form of CD28 in peripheral blood. To investigate the concentrations of soluble CD28 in patients with Graves' disease, we used a sensitive dual monoclonal antibody sandwich enzyme-linked immun...

In juvenile patients with Graves’ disease, extraocular muscles may be involved. Ultrasonography is a very important and informative diagnostic method in patients with exophthalmos and Graves’ disease. The aim of our study was to evaluate medial and inferior extraocular muscle thickness in juvenile patients with Graves’ disease. Materials and methods: Ultrasonography was performed on 78 orbits o...

Graves' disease is a thyroid-specific autoimmune disorder in which the body makes antibodies to the thyroid-stimulating hormone receptor leading to hyperthyroidism. Therapeutic options for the treatment of Graves' disease include medication, radioactive iodine ablation, and surgery. Radioactive iodine is absolutely contraindicated in pregnancy as exposure to I-131 to the fetal thyroid can resul...
