Peritonitis is a common and serious complication of peritoneal dialysis (PD). Although less than 5% peritonitis episodes result in death, the direct or major contributing cause death around 16% PD patients. The longevity Peritoneal Dialysis markedly reduced by risk related infections. In CAPD, end 6 months treatment probability developing at least one episode 30%; 50% 1 year; 70% 2 years 80% 3 ...

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES To discuss findings from an ethnographic study, considering the experiences of patients and families, using peritoneal dialysis at home in the United Kingdom. BACKGROUND Peritoneal dialysis is a daily, life-preserving treatment for end-stage renal disease, undertaken in the patient's home. With ever-growing numbers of patients requiring treatment for this condition, the in...

T he adequacy of peritoneal dialysis in terms of urea and creatinine kinetics is becoming better established (1 ,2). Weekly creatinine clearance of more than 50 L normalized to body surface area are currently recommended for minimally adequate dialysis. The delivery of an adequate peritoneal dialysis prescription is dependent on the compliance of the patient with that prescription. Keen et at. ...

During continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis, the peritoneum is directly and continuously exposed to unphysiologic peritoneal dialysis fluid; the resulting mesothelial damage has been suggested to cause loss of ultrafiltration and dialysis efficacy. The present study investigated the effect of a high glucose concentration on cultured human peritoneal mesothelial cells to clarify the cause o...

Four cases of peritonitis caused by the filamentous fungus Paecilomyces variotii in patients on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis are reported. Removal of the Tenckhoff catheter and antifungal chemotherapy led to resolution of symptoms in all cases. Possible contaminating events are discussed, and reported infections with P. variotii are reviewed.

While there is no doubt that renal transplantation would be the preferred option for all patients suffering from end stage renal disease, this is sadly an unrealistic aim for many patients in the UK. There is a shortage of donor organs and, with the increasing percentage of elderly patients on dialysis, under 50% of all dialysis patients are on the national transplant waiting list. Of the 12,00...

Background: Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is an efficient alternative for hemodialysis. Removal of waste metabolites and excess water from the blood circulation are the two main tasks done during dialysis. These are done by using a filter; in PD, the naturally semi-permeable peritoneal membrane acts as the filter. Automated PD machines control intelligently the operations to enhance the efficiency a...

Background: Acute kidney injury is the sudden failure of kidneys to maintain body homeostasis and acute peritoneal dialysis is a life saving bedside mode of its management. However, complications like peritonitis, leakage, obstruction and malposition of catheter can occur during acute peritoneal dialysis. Objectives: To document the immediate complications of acute peritoneal dialysis in childr...

INTRODUCTION Presentations of abdominal pain in patients on peritoneal dialysis deserve maximal attention and careful differential diagnosis on admittance to medical care. In this case report a gangrenous appendicitis in a patient on automated peritoneal dialysis is presented. CASE PRESENTATION We report the case of a 38-year-old Caucasian man with end-stage renal disease who was on automated...

A 63-year-old female with chronic renal failure on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis developed chronic peritonitis. A CDC group EO-3 organism was isolated from the peritoneal dialysis fluid on five occasions over a period of 4 months. This is the first reported isolation of this organism in which it is associated with a patient on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis.
