The standardized enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for measurement of serum immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibody responses to meningococcal C polysaccharide has been modified to employ assay conditions that ensure specificity and favor detection primarily of high-avidity antibodies. The modified and standard assays were used to measure IgG antibody concentrations in sera of toddlers vaccinat...

The pneumococcus continues to be a major killer despite advances in medical treatment. The pneumococcus' polysaccharide capsule is its main weapon. The pneu-mococcus has 90 distinct versions (i.e., seroptypes) of polysaccharide capsule that help the organism to avoid capture by the immune system. For approximately a century , researchers have been developing pneumococcal vaccines that are based...

BACKGROUND New vaccines containing highly conserved Streptococcus pneumoniae proteins such as pneumolysin toxoid (dPly) and histidine-triad protein D (PhtD) are being developed to provide broader protection against pneumococcal disease. This study evaluated the safety, reactogenicity and immunogenicity of different pneumococcal protein-containing formulations in adults. METHODS In a phase I d...

Eighteen clustered cases of meningococcal disease associated with B:2a:P1.5 strains doubled the annual incidence up to 4.3 x 10(5) in Navarra, Spain, in 2007. Eleven percent of cases were fatalities, and 74% of cases were individuals 10 to 24 years old. This is the third cluster associated with this strain in northern Spain since 2001.

Infection with Streptococcus pneumoniae remains a major global health burden meaning the development of effective vaccines is urgently needed. The current 23-valent polysaccharide vaccine has been shown to prevent pneumococcal pneumonia in immunocompetent young adults, but not in elderly persons. However, in prevention of invasive pneumococcal disease, the vaccine is efficacious in the elderly ...

BACKGROUND Typhoid fever causes more than 21 million cases of disease and 200,000 deaths yearly worldwide, with more than 90% of the disease burden being reported from Asia. Epidemiological data show high disease incidence in young children and suggest that immunization programs should target children below two years of age: this is not possible with available vaccines. The Novartis Vaccines In...

The encapsulated bacteria Streptococcus pneumoniae (the pneumococcus), Neisseria meningitidis (the meningococcus) and Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) are the main causes of purulent meningitis, the peak incidence of which is seen in the first two years of life. The polysaccharide capsule of these bacteria is an essential virulence determinant, and antibodies to it are protective, suggesting...

BACKGROUND During the first introduction of a group A meningococcal vaccine (PsA-TT) in 2010-2011 and its rollout from 2011 to 2013, >150 million eligible people, representing 12 hyperendemic meningitis countries, have been vaccinated. METHODS The new vaccine effectiveness evaluation framework was established by the World Health Organization and partners. Meningitis case-based surveillance wa...
