Several viruses have been reported to infect lettuce. The most important is Lettuce mosaic virus (LMV), a potyvirus found worldwide transmitted by seeds and aphids, in a non-persistent manner. LMV causes quite variable symptoms, including mosaic, dwarfing, failure to form proper heads, and sometimes necrotic reactions. Cultivars carrying the mo11 and mo12 genes have resistance to the common str...

Arabidopsis thaliana DBP1 belongs to the plant-specific family of DNA-binding protein phosphatases. Although recently identified as a novel host factor mediating susceptibility to potyvirus, little is known about DBP1 targets and partners and the molecular mechanisms underlying its function. Analyzing changes in the phosphoproteome of a loss-of-function dbp1 mutant enabled the identification of...

Phylogenomic evidence suggested that recombination is an important evolutionary force for potyviruses, one of the larger families of plant RNA viruses. However, mixed-genotype potyvirus infections are marked by low levels of cellular coinfection, precluding template switching and recombination events between virus genotypes during genomic RNA replication. To reconcile these conflicting observat...

Tobacco etch potyvirus (TEV) is transmitted by aphids in a non-persistent manner with the assistance of a virus-encoded protein known as helper component (HC-Pro). To produce a biologically active form of recombinant TEV HC-Pro protein, heterologous expression in the methylotrophic yeast Pichia pastoris was used. A cDNA encoding the TEV HC-Pro region, fused to a Saccharomyces cerevisiae alpha-m...

Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam. commonly known as sweet potato, is an important staple food worldwide, mainly due to its high nutritional value and yield. However, vegetative reproduction of potato makes it more susceptible viral infections, which threatens productivity, quality, difficult long-term preservation in germplasm banks. Also, can act a virus reservoir infecting the rest plant accessions b...

Superinfection exclusion (SIE) is an antagonistic interaction between identical or closely related viruses in host cells. Previous studies by us and others led to the hypothesis that SIE was elicited one more proteins encoded genomes of primary viruses. Here, we tested this using Turnip mosaic virus (TuMV), a member genus Potyvirus family Potyviridae, with significant economic consequences. To ...

We present here the first complete genome sequences of Sweet potato virus 2 (SPV2) from sweet potato in Australia and East Timor, and compare these with five complete SPV2 genome sequences from South Korea and one each from Spain and the United States. Both were closely related to SPV2 genomes from South Korea, Spain, and the United States.
