We report the occurrence of acute pulmonary edema in a patient receiving therapy with nalbuphine, a synthetic narcotic analgesic. Other potential causes of acute pulmonary edema were excluded. It is likely that all opiate drugs share the propensity to produce acute pulmonary edema, and nalbuphine resembles other opiates in this regard.
Three schizophrenic adults with previous histories of using phenothiazine derivatives developed acute pulmonary edema after taking large amounts of these drugs. The clinical manifestations included coma (three), hypothermia (two), tachycardia (two), miosis (two) and hypotension (one). All three patients underwent gastric lavage and were treated supportively. The fulminant pulmonary edema in the...
Non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema (NCPE) is a rare adverse reaction to iodinated radiocontrast media (RCM), in which all previous cases were immediate reactions. A 56-year-old male was given iopamidol, a non-ionic, low osmolar RCM, during coronary artery angiography. He developed pulmonary edema and fever a day after the procedure. Despite diuretic therapy, the patient's pulmonary edema worsened ...
BACKGROUND Early pulmonary edema is common after orthotopic liver transplantation. Associated pathogenic mechanisms might involve increased activity of cardiac-inhibitory systems due to increased vasodilator production, mainly nitric oxide (NO). NO is primarily responsible for flow-mediated vasodilatation (FMD). We investigated the incidence of pulmonary edema in liver transplant patients and i...
Introduction: Young pregnant woman (32 weeks) following one-month illnesses, including peripheral edema, paresthesia and shortness of breath, for which no specific diagnosis was made in the evaluations; she was hospitalized with severe respiratory distress and pulmonary edema. Re-examination revealed severe systolic heart failure (left ventricular ejection fraction: 10-15%) with preeclampsia. A...
We report a patient with primary anti-phospholipid syndrome (APS) who developed pulmonary edema following sudden-onset pain in the left, lower back of the chest. Radiological examinations demonstrated fresh infarction of the left adrenal gland but no obvious thrombi in pulmonary arteries. The patient quickly recovered from pulmonary edema with anti-coagulation therapy alone. Primary APS may hav...
Clinical efficacy of combination therapy using vasodilators for pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is well established. However, information on its safety are limited. We experienced a case of primary Sjogren's syndrome associated with PAH where the patient developed pulmonary edema immediately after the introduction of upfront triple combination therapy. Although the combination therapy suc...
The relationship between left ventricular filling pressure and plasma colloid osmotic pressure to pulmonary edema was examined in a group of 37 patients, the majority of whom were hypovolemic. Sixteen patients developed pulmonary edema during fluid infusion. In the 21 patients who did not develop pulmonary edema, the left ventricular filling pressure was slightly elevated but the colloid osmoti...
The lung changes in left heart failure are grouped into four main categories or stages: (1) pulmonary congestion, (2) interstitial edema, (3) alveolar edema, and (4) miscellaneous findings. Some patients, particularly those with mitral stenosis, develop these changes gradually, passing successively through the stages of pulmonary congestion-->interstitial edema >alveolar edema. Other patients, ...
