Recent progress in microand nanofabrication techniques enables the creation of hierarchically architected microlattices with dimensional control over six orders of magnitude, from centimeters down to nanometers. This hierarchical control facilitates the exploration of opportunities to exploit nano-sized material effects in structural materials. In this work, we present the fabrication, characte...

A phase-field approach becomes a more popular candidate in modeling crack propagation. It uses scalar auxiliary variable, namely to model discontinuity zone continuity domain. Furthermore, the fourth-order produces better convergence rate and accurate solutions than second-order one. However, it is available for propagation brittle material. This study addresses combining non-standard form with...

The object of this investigation was to gain a better understanding of the flow and fracture propensity of steel plates in which the Wells-type notch served as the fracture initiator. This type of notch is of importance in experimental investigations of the brittle fracture phenomenon because it successfully initiates low-stress brittle fractures in the wide-plate specimen in which it is used. ...

A probabilistic model for the randomness of the progressive crack growth in a quasi-brittle material such as concrete is presented. The model consists of a Markov chain adapted to R-curve behavior. It yields the crack propagation probability in any loading step as well as the probability of failure at any stage of the fracture process. The R-curve is obtained from the given test data on the eff...

We propose a discontinuous finite element approximation for a model of quasi-static growth of brittle fractures in linearly elastic bodies formulated by Francfort and Marigo, and based on the classical Griffith’s criterion. We restrict our analysis to the case of anti-planar shear and we consider discontinuous displacements which are piecewise affine with respect to a regular triangulation.

Abstract The coupled criterion of Finite Fracture Mechanics (FFM) has already been successfully applied to assess the brittle failure initiation in cracked and notched structures subjected quasi-static loading conditions. FFM originality lies addressing onset through simultaneous fulfilment a stress requirement energy balance, both computed over finite distance ahead raiser. Accordingly, this l...

Peridynamics (PD) is a new tool, based on the non-local theory for modelling fracture mechanics, where particles connected through physical interaction used to represent domain. By using PD theory, damage or crack in material domain can be shown much practical representation. This study compares between Prototype Microelastic Brittle (PMB) model and Quasi-Brittle (QBR) framework of Bond-based (...
