Three widely-available surface wave measurement techniques, including two active-source methods, the Spectral Analysis of Surface Waves (SASW) method and the Multi-channel Analysis of Surface Waves (MASW) method, and one passive-source method, the Refraction Microtremor (ReMi) method, were applied at a complex-layered site. Dispersion relations were compared to one another. Outcomes from the MA...

S U M M A R Y We describe a method to invert surface wave dispersion data for a model of shear velocities with uncertainties in the crust and uppermost mantle. The inversion is a multistep process, constrained by a priori information, that culminates in a Markov-chain Monte-Carlo sampling of model space to yield an ensemble of acceptable models at each spatial node. The model is radially anisot...

we investigate the temperature-dependences of the Brillouin frequency shift in three different kind of single-mode fibers using a heterodyne method for sensing temperature. Positive dependences coefficients of 0.77, 0.56 and 1.45MHz/0C are demonstrated for 25 km long single-mode fiber, 10 km long non-zero dispersion shifted fiber and 100 m photonic crystal fiber, respectively. The results indic...

Nanowire chains (NCs) are analyzed by use of a rigorous, full-wave, Source-Model Technique (SMT). The technique employs a proper periodic Green's function which converges regardless of whether the structure is lossless or lossy. By use of this Green's function, it is possible to determine the complex propagation constants of the NC modes directly and accurately, as solutions of a dispersion equ...

A nonlinear Poincare sphere method for measuring polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) using the four-wave mixing (FWM) effect in single-mode optical fibers is presented. This method is based on the FWM-power transfer function on the polarization states of the input signals. Average PMD can be obtained by using this method with measurements in just a narrow optical bandwidth.

Waveguides in non-destructive evaluation (NDE) applications are commonly of a regular geometry (e.g., circular and ring cross section) for which analytical solutions exist. In this paper, wave propagation in infinitely long strips of large rectangular aspect ratio is discussed. Due to the finite width of strips, a large number of modes exist within the structure. This complicates the analysis a...

An average shear-wave velocity structure has been estimated for the path between the Kamchatka Isthmus and Petropavlovsk-Kamchatski. It is obtained from the Monte Carlo inversion of the Rayleigh and Love wave group velocity dispersion curves measured using broad-band seismograms of events in Northern Kamchatka recorded by the IRIS station PET in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatski. The Moho interface was ...

We determine the three-dimensional shear wave velocity structure of the crust and upper mantle in China using Green’’s functions obtained from seismic ambient noise cross-correlation. The data we use are from the China National Seismic Network, global and regional networks and PASSCAL stations in the region. We first acquire cross-correlation seismograms between all possible station pairs. We t...

Phase velocity and attenuation of guided waves have been estimated from multireceiver, full waveform, acoustic logging data using the extended Prony's method. Since a formation affects velocity and attenuation, estimating these quantities is important in evaluating the formation properties. The estimation is performed using an array processing technique which requires two steps: (1) the traces ...

We propose a kind of photonic crystal fiber (PCF) designed with an annular core and fabricated using a single material. Characteristics of such fibers, including the mode field distributions of both the core and cladding modes, the effective mode area of the fundamental core mode, and the dispersion profile, are investigated using the finite element method. The coupling between the fundamental ...
