The emerged sequences of coral reef and marine terraces the Cuban Archipelago have been recognized since end 19th century but with noticeable exceptions, their bio-constructions and/or deposits are not dated. northern Caribbean islands associated archipelagos located in a left-lateral strike-slip tectonic setting, at boundary between North America plates. Cuba is only landmass on American Plate...

WL iLLiAM B. BULL AND ALAN F. Cooper (1) identify as marine terrace remnants 18 "notches" or steps at altitudes up to 1700 m on the ridge crests southeast of the Alpine fault, New Zealand. They infer late Quatemary uplift rates on this upthrown side of the fault at three study areas. Their conclusions are based on (i) morphology ofthe steps, which are said to resemble eroded marine cliffs and s...

To interpret recent experiments on the dynamics of step doubling, we have studied a simple model of this phase transition. With Monte Carlo, we compute the time-dependence of the order parameter in the limit of rapid diffusion across terraces. Analysis of the data shows that the limiting step is the time for adjacent steps to touch each other; subsequent “zipping” together happens rapidly. From...

In mice, recent thymic emigrants (RTEs) make up a large part of the naïve T cell pool and have been suggested to be a distinct short-lived pool. In humans, however, the life span and number of RTEs are unknown. Although (2)H(2)O labeling in young mice showed high thymic-dependent daily naïve T cell production, long term up- and down-labeling with (2)H(2)O in human adults revealed a low daily pr...
