We have investigated a prospective series of 100 acute traumatic haemarthroses of the knee in a general non-athletic population. All the patients had normal radiographs and an aspiration which confirmed the haemarthrosis, before undergoing ligament testing and an arthroscopic examination under anaesthesia. Only one patient had no serious pathology; in the other 99 a total of 193 lesions were re...
Patella sleeve fracture is a rare fracture that only occurs in children. Diagnosis is difficult both clinically and radiologically. A high-riding patella and hemarthrosis are important signs when diagnosing this fracture. We report a case of an 11-year-old boy who suffered from patella sleeve fracture without visible bony fragments on a lateral radiograph. Open reduction with transosseous tunne...
Traumatic or spontaneous hemarthroses are an important cause of joint effusions, and can complicate innate or acquired coagulopathies. The elbow is an unusual location for a spontaneous hemarthrosis; we describe a previously unreported case of warfarin-induced spontaneous elbow hemarthrosis, diagnosed by point-of-care ultrasound. On the basis of clinical and ultrasound findings arthrocentesis w...
Invasive disease caused by Haemophilus influenzae serotype A (Hia) is rare in children. Clinical syndromes caused by Hia include meningitis, sepsis and respiratory tract infections. Septic arthritis is rare in children with invasive Hia infection and hemarthrosis has not been described in the published literature. We report a case of septic arthritis and hemarthrosis caused by Hia infection in ...
Abstract Background Osteoarthritis (OA) is a leading cause of chronic knee pain and disability with reported prevalence 25–30% the population. Knee OA has traditionally been thought as degenerative disease only related to repetitive injury “wear tear” mechanism, yet it now considered much more complex inflammatory nature induced by cytokines mediators through abnormal neo-vascularization (angio...
Angiomatous malformation of the muscle around the knee joint is an extremely uncommon cause of recurrent swelling of the joint. We report a case of a 13-year-old boy who presented with recurrent episodes of knee joint swelling. Though the history and physical examination was typical, magnetic resonance imaging clinched the diagnosis.
History The patient denies any recent trauma to his left knee but states that approximately 1 year ago he completed a prolonged course of physical therapy for symptoms of medialsided knee pain with activity-related swelling. The symptoms persisted following therapy, and he underwent arthroscopic surgery. During the procedure, a small portion of his medial meniscus was removed, and a damaged are...
