Oxidative damage has been suggested to be a contributing factor in the development to diabetic nephropathy (DN). Recently, there has been evidence that pentoxifylline (PTX) has free radical-scavenging properties; thus, its anti-inflammatory and renoprotective effects may be related to a reduction in reactive oxygen species production. It is likely that the pharmacological effects of PTX include...

Emerging data show that increased serum uric acid (SUA) concentration is an independent risk factor for end-stage renal disease. Treatment with the antihypertensive drug losartan lowers SUA. Whether reductions in SUA during losartan therapy are associated with renoprotection is unclear. We therefore tested this hypothesis. In a post hoc analysis of 1342 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus an...

For years, there have been studies based on the use of natural compounds plant-derived as potential therapeutic agents for various diseases in humans. Curcumin is a phenolic compound extracted from Curcuma longa rhizome commonly used in Asia as a spice, pigment and additive. In traditional medicine of India and China, curcumin is considered as a therapeutic agent used in several foods. Numerous...

a Forgotten Option? To the Editor: We have read with interest the article by MacWalter et al,1 the comment made by Fournier et al,2 and the authors’ reply. We would like to comment. We disagree with some of the comments made by MacWalter et al. The recommendation of the use of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs) cannot be made on the basis of the findings of PROGRESS.3 The risk red...

Salvianolic acid B (SAB) is one the major phytocomponents of Radix Salvia miltiorrhiza and exhibit numerous health promoting properties. The objective of the current study was to examine whether SAB exerts a renoprotective effect by attenuating oxidative stress and inflammatory response through activating phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/serine-threonine kinase B (PI3K/Akt) signaling pathway in a ...

BACKGROUND Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) are involved in diabetic nephropathy (DN). The AGE formation inhibitor pyridoxamine (PM) is renoprotective in DN and in normoglycaemic obese Zucker rats. In chronic allograft nephropathy (CAN), renal AGE accumulation occurs as well. METHODS To investigate whether inhibition of AGE formation is renoprotective in CAN, we studied the Fisher 344 t...

In total, 57 patients (31 males and 26 females) with diabetic nephropathy were studied on a comparative basis to observe the renoprotective effectiveness of eprosartan mesylate and lercanidipine. Eprosartan mesylate revealed a higher nephroprotective effect compared with lercanidipine at comparable antihypertensive effects of equivalent doses of both these preparations.

We have shown recently that fasudil, a Rho-kinase inhibitor, has renoprotective effects in salt-sensitive hypertensive rats. We hypothesized that activation of Rho-kinase is involved in the pathogenesis of glomerulosclerosis in malignant hypertensive rats. To test this hypothesis, we studied the following 4 groups: control Wistar-Kyoto rats, untreated deoxycorticosterone-acetate salt spontaneou...

BACKGROUND Diabetic nephropathy is the leading cause of end-stage renal disease in developed countries. We evaluated the renoprotective effects of dual blockade of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system by adding treatment with aliskiren, an oral direct renin inhibitor, to treatment with the maximal recommended dose of losartan (100 mg daily) and optimal antihypertensive therapy in patients w...
