Crystallographic reconstruction of parent austenite grain boundaries from the martensitic microstructure in a wear resistant steel was carried out using electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD). The present study mainly aims to investigate the parent austenite grains from the martensitic structure in an as-rolled (reference) steel sample and samples obtained by quenching at different cooling r...

The microstructure of multiphase steels assisted by transformation-induced plasticity consists of grains of retained austenite embedded in a ferrite-based matrix. Upon mechanical loading, retained austenite may transform into martensite, as a result of which plastic deformations are induced in the surrounding phases, i.e., the ferrite-based matrix and the untransformed austenite. In the present...

Terms of service of the steels with retained austenite in the microstructure, is severely depended on the stability of austenite during the course of deformation. The present work aims to evaluate the mechanical stability of austenite in nanostructured, carbide free bainitic steels during tensile testing and cold rolling process. To achieve the microstructure with retained austenite, the steel ...

A 75-year-old female with persistent long-lasting atrial fibrillation (AF) spontaneously reverted to sinus rhythm (SR). She had been suffering from mitral stenosis and secondary tricuspid insufficiency with AF since her 50’s. She underwent mitral valve replacement and tricuspid annuloplasty 3 years previously. Spontaneous defibrillation improved cardiac status and remained in SR for 3 years. Po...

Motivated by experimental observations on CuAlNi single crystals, we present a theoretical investigation of non-planar austenite-martensite interfaces. Our analysis is based on the nonlinear elasticity model for martensitic transformations and we show that, under suitable assumptions on the lattice parameters, non-planar interfaces are possible, in particular for transitions with cubic austenite.

Bainitic microstructures in which fine platelets offerrite are intimately mixed with films of austenite are known to exhibit good combinations of strength and toughness. It isfound that the thickness of these austenitefilms can be estimated by assuming that the carbon diffusion field around an existing plate offerrite prevents the close approach of another parallel plate. This is because the re...

Modulated phases occur in numerous functional materials like giant ferroelectrics and magnetic shape-memory alloys. To understand the origin of these phases, we employ and generalize the concept of adaptive martensite. As a starting point, we investigate the coexistence of austenite, adaptive 14M phase, and tetragonal martensite in Ni-Mn-Ga magnetic shape-memory alloy epitaxial films. We show t...

There are important aspects of steel which are hidden from ordinary view and largely from the users of steels. They nevertheless determine the macroscopic behaviour. One example is that the magnetic properties of austenite determine that it has a larger thermal expansion coefficient than ferrite, whereas intuition would suggest otherwise given that austenite has a greater density. This and othe...
