Spinal deformities in farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) are often observed in intensive farming systems and result in production losses. Many putative factors have been implicated with the formation of spinal deformities in larger salmon. This condition has been described as broken back syndrome, curvy back disease, and short tails.
Here, we report the draft genome sequence of the type strain Aeromonas salmonicida subsp. salmonicida ATCC 33658 isolated from Salmo salar The size of the genome is 4,728,143 bp with a G+C content of 58.5%. The A. salmonicida subsp. salmonicida ATCC 33658 genome lacks essential virulence genes that were likely lost during genomic rearrangements.
BACKGROUND Infectious diseases of the central nervous system (CNS) remain common and life-threatening, especially in developing countries. Knowledge of the aetiological agents responsible for these infections is essential to guide empiric therapy and develop a rational public health policy. To date most data has come from patients admitted to tertiary referral hospitals in Asia and there is lim...
Abstract Introduction Successful surgery relies on complete appreciation of the appropriate anatomy, with inadequate expertise noted as a key cause surgical errors. Despite this, there are fewer formal sessions dedicated to anatomy tuition, trainees expected be taught “at operating table” (Older, 2004). Aim We investigated how various teaching methods were received by core (CSTs). Method 28 CST...
Electronic Support Measures consist of passive receivers which can identify emitters coming from a small bearing angle, which, in turn, can be related to platforms that belong to 3 classes: either Friend, Neutral, or Hostile. Decision makers prefer results presented in STANAG 1241 allegiance form, which adds 2 new classes: Assumed Friend, and Suspect. Dezert-Smarandache theory (DSmT) is particu...
mu-Conotoxins (mu-CTXs) specifically inhibit Na(+) flux by occluding the pore of voltage-gated Na(+) channels. Although the three-dimensional structures of mu-CTXs are well defined, the molecular configuration of the channel receptor is much less certain; even the fundamental question of whether the four homologous Na(+) channel domains are arranged in a clockwise or counter-clockwise configura...
Today, over 94% of all adult Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) are in the aquaculture niche and wild numbers continue to decline while aquaculture numbers increase. The developmental and evolutionary forces in the aquaculture or “domestic” niche are so unlike those in the wild niche that two distinct biologies are being created from the original Atlantic salmon species. We may now need to recognize...
Quality improvement has lately become a ‘hot’ topic within the Swedish healthcare sector. In the Kalmar county council in south-east Sweden, a large-scale improvement programme was initiated in 2007. The aim is to become the safest county council in Sweden by 2014. Quality in health care is often measured in terms of patient safety. Health care has traditionally seen the patient as an ‘outcome’...
The Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and African bichir (Polypterus senegalus) are both actinopterygian fish species that continuously replace their teeth without the involvement of a successional dental lamina. Instead, they share the presence of a middle dental epithelium: an epithelial tier enclosed by inner and outer dental epithelium. It has been hypothesized that this tier could functionally...
