A method is presented for identifying individuals by shape, given a sequence of noisy silhouettes segmented from video. A spectral partitioning framework is used to cluster similar poses and automatically extract gait shapes. The method uses a variance-weighted similarity metric to induce clusters that cover disparate stages in the gait cycle. This technique is applied to the HumanID Gait Chall...

The use of statistical shape models is a promising approach for robust segmentation of medical images. One of the major challenges in building a 3D shape model from a training set of segmented instances of an object is the determination of the correspondence between them. We propose a novel geometric approach that is based on minimizing the distortion of the mapping between two surfaces. In thi...

We develop a statistical test to determine if shape belongs to a given homogeneous family of shapes based on general statistical hypothesis testing. First, we illustrate the membership test on a simple random triangle model. Second we apply this test to face identification problem with the task to identify that the last photo is of the same person with different facial expression. Third, we out...

In this paper we extend previous work [Aubel00] and propose a muscle model suitable for computer graphics based on physiological and anatomical considerations. Muscle motion and deformation is automatically derived from an action line that is deformed using a 1D mass-spring system. The resulting model is fast and can accommodate most superficial human muscles.

In this paper we consider hemivariational inequalities of hyperbolic type. The existence result for hemivariational inequality is given and the existence theorem for the optimal shape design problem is shown.

This paper gives an overview of research in the area of adaptive structures. A general description of smart material systems is given. Particular focus is given to the following fields of application: semi-passive concepts, energy harvesting, semi-active concepts, active vibration control, and active structural acoustic control. The use of adaptive structures in structural health monitoring app...

In the field of mesh segmentation, co-segmentation techniques achieve state-of-the-art performance; however, the segmentation results rely on the shape descriptors used in the segmentation process. In this paper, we propose a novel type of descriptor called the “volumetric shape context” (VSC). For each triangle in the mesh, the VSC describes the distribution of the shape’s volume relative to t...
