We present dye visualizations of the wake behind a flexible plate flow when its leading edge is forced into harmonic heave motion. We show that, when the forcing amplitude is sufficiently large, a reverse Bénard-von Kármán vortex street is formed in the wake, indicative of the production of positive thrust.
Ship design is a complex multidisciplinary optimization process to determine configuration variables that satisfy a set of mission requirements. Unfortunately, high fidelity commercial software for the ship performance estimation such as Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) are computationally expensive and time consuming to execute and deter the ship designer's ...
The nonlinear responses of ship rolling motion characterized by a roll damping moment are of great interest to naval architects and ocean engineers. Modeling and identification of the nonlinear damping moment are essential to incorporate the inherent nonlinearity in design, analysis, and control of a ship. A stochastic nonparametric approach for identification of nonlinear damping in the genera...
Experimental test is one of the methods for predicting drag ships using towing tank. This method has a good level accuracy but requires quite complex equipment and costs. With advancing technology computing, CFD emerged as an alternative problem-solving, especially in hydrodynamics analysis. study aims to ensure Computational Fluid dynamics (CFD) by verifying experimental data on high-speed ves...
Research toward the development of point absorber ocean wave energy converters (WEC) is migrating from energy absorption of ocean wave heave only, to the absorption of heave and surge. Due to the additional dimension of surge, the mathematic relationship between the ocean waves and the WEC has shifted from a linear model to a nonlinear model. This change has made back driven wave height from de...
Two spaceships, A and B, are in motion relative to each other. Their motion relative to the empty space they are in is undefined and undefinable. We can consider ship A to be stationary relative to space and ship B to be moving or vice versa. The two situations are entirely equivalent. Each ship’s motion relative to the other is symmetric. Relative to a clock in either ship, an identical clock ...
The seakeeping performance of a damaged ship is highly correlated to the wave incident direction. Therefore, predicting motion responses under various incoming waves important. In this study, DTMB 5415 model investigated by focusing on its roll beam condition. an angle (?) 180° widely studied experimentally and numerically. But behaviours ? = 0° remain unknown. This study aims analyse rarely vo...
This paper looks at the effect that a mono-directional Power Take Off (PTO) has on the motions and power extraction of a Wave Energy Converter (WEC). A monodirectional damper is one where the resisting force only operates in one direction. The model comprises of a cylinder that is restrained to move in heave, reacting against an internal mass (also limited to move in heave) that is connected to...
