Understanding the determination of cell fate choices after cancer treatment will shed new light on cancer resistance. In this study, we quantitatively analyzed the individual cell fate choice in resistant UM-SCC-38 head and neck cancer cells exposed to cisplatin. Our study revealed a highly heterogeneous pattern of cell fate choices in UM-SCC-38 cells, in comparison to that of the control, non-...

Microtubule-binding drugs such as taxol are frontline treatments for a variety of cancers but exactly how they yield patient benefit is unclear. In cell culture, inhibiting microtubule dynamics prevents spindle assembly, leading to mitotic arrest followed by either apoptosis in mitosis or slippage, whereby a cell returns to interphase without dividing. Myeloid cell leukaemia-1 (Mcl-1), a pro-su...

Certain (non polymeric) fluids show an anomalously low friction when flowing against well chosen solid walls. We discuss here one possible explanation, postulating that a gaseous film of small thickness h is present between fluid and wall. When h is smaller than the mean free path l of the gas (Knudsen regime) the Navier length b is expected to be independent of h and very large (microns).

1Introduction Grasping is an important issue in cooperating systems such as multi-fingered hands and multiple robots. Numerous reports can be found on grasp planning. Researches on grasp planning focus on two category problems: grasp analysis and grasp synthesis. In grasp analysis, most of the researchers have focused on finding appropriate conditions for force-closure grasps. Early, Reulaux in...

PURPOSE To assess the effect of cyanoacrylate glue on knot slippage and strength in vitro. METHODS Ethibond 3/0 was tested using a tensile tester. A single drop of cyanoacrylate glue was applied to the knots. Seven knot configurations (10 samples each) were tested: (1) a surgeon's knot (S) plus 4 square throws (+4) without glue (control group), (2) S plus one square throw (+1) without glue, (...

Detection of incipient slippage is of great importance in robotics for the control of grasping and manipulation tasks. Together with fine-form reconstruction and primitive recognition, it has to be the main feature of an artificial tactile system. The system presented here is based on a neural network used to detect incipient slippage and on a skin-like sensor sensible to normal and shear stres...

Reducing the friction of liquid flows on solid surfaces has become an important issue with the development of microfluidics systems, and more generally for the manipulation of fluids at small scales. To achieve high slippage of liquids at walls, the use of gas as a lubricant--such as microbubbles trapped in superhydrophobic surfaces--has been suggested. The effect of microbubbles on the effecti...

Geological formations, environmental conditions, and soil mechanics frequently generate undesired effects on rovers' mobility, such as slippage or sinkage. Underestimating these may compromise the operation lead to a premature end of mission. Minimizing mobility risks becomes priority for colonising Moon Mars. However, addressing this challenge cannot be treated equally every celestial body sin...

PURPOSE To determine, among a sample of young black male (YBM), whether female application of male condoms for penile-vaginal intercourse would be associated with higher or lower rates of breakage or slippage. A secondary aim was to investigate if higher rates of breakage or slippage were associated with increased odds of acquiring chlamydia and/or gonorrhea. METHODS A cross-sectional study o...

The Potyviridae comprise the largest and most important family of RNA plant viruses. An essential overlapping ORF, termed pipo, resides in an internal region of the main polyprotein ORF. Recently, expression of pipo was shown to depend on programmed transcriptional slippage at a conserved GAAAAAA sequence, resulting in the insertion of an extra A into a proportion of viral transcripts, fusing t...
