We present an x-ray study of doped charge density waves systems. When a 2k f-charge density wave is strongly pinned to impurities, an interference effect gives rise to an asymmetry between the intensities of the +2k f and −2k f satellite reflections. Moreover, profile asymmetry of the satellite reflections indicates the existence of Friedel oscillations (FOs) around the defects. We have studied...

After summarizing neutrino oscillation results I discuss high and low-scale seesaw mechanisms, with or without supersymmetry, as well as recent attempts to understand the pattern of neutrino mixing from flavor symmetries. I also mention the possibility of intrinsic supersymmetric neutrino masses in the context of broken R parity models, showing how this leads to clear tests at the LHC. NEUTRINO...

BACKGROUND The mosquito-borne dengue viruses are a major public health problem throughout the tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Changes in temperature and precipitation have well-defined roles in the transmission cycle and may thus play a role in changing incidence levels. The El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is a multiyear climate driver of local temperature and precipitation w...

We summarize our current understanding of the neutrino flavor conversions inside a core collapse supernova, clarifying the important role played by the “collective effects” in determining flavor conversion probabilities. The potentially observable νe and ν̄e spectra may help us identify the neutrino mixing scenario, distinguish between primary flux models, and learn more about the supernova expl...

Brane world theories contain additional degrees of freedom related to the geometry of the extra dimension space which can be understood as brane oscillations (branons). In the case where the fundamental gravitational scale is much larger than the brane tension scale, these branons are the only extra degrees of freedom at low energies coming from the extra dimensions. Branons are generically sta...

[1] The first annually resolved sedimentary record from the Cretaceous is used to develop time series of inter‐annual and decadal scale climate variability from the Arctic Ocean. Analysis of records spanning 1000 years reveals strong periodicities in the quasi‐biennial oscillation and El Niño ‐ Southern Oscillation (ENSO) band as well as a 14 year period, which all closely match periodicities t...

The North Pacific Oscillation (NPO) and the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) have effects on California that are of interest to energy producers and consumers. In particular, changes in the NPO are associated with statewide shifts in simultaneous wintertime temperatures, and, to a lesser extent, temperatures in the following summer. Observations over the period 1960 to 2001 indicate that the...

We investigate the connection between the equatorial Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) and different types of the Northern Hemisphere mid-winter major stratospheric sudden warmings (SSWs), i.e., vortex-displacement and vortex-split SSWs. The MJO-SSW relationship for vortex-split SSWs is stronger than that for vortex-displacement SSWs, as a result of the stronger and more coherent eastward propaga...

If the tau neutrino is as heavy as 10 MeV which may have certain astrophysical implications, the neutrino mass pattern is studied so as to accommodate the new oscillation observations. It predicts that the electron neutrino has Marjorana mass around 0.05 eV. A supersymmetric model is described to realize the above scenario.

The relationship between the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the Southern Hemisphere Annular Mode (SAM) is examined, with the goal of understanding how various strong SAM events modulate the ENSO teleconnection to the South Pacific (45 –70 S, 150 – 70 W). The focus is on multi-month, multi-event variations during the last 50 years. A significant (p \ 0.10) relationship is observed, most...
