The purpose of the research conducted was to develop a real-time surgical simulator for preoperative planning of surgery in congenital heart disease. The main problem simulating procedures on cardiac morphology is the need for a large degree of detail and simulation speed. In combination with a demand for physically realistic real-time behaviour this gives us tradeoffs not easily balanced. The ...

There is a growing demand for surgical simulators to do fast and precise calculations of tissue deformation to simulate increasingly complex morphology in real-time. Unfortunately, even fast spring-mass based systems have slow convergence rates for large models. This paper presents a method to accelerate computation of a spring-mass system in order to simulate a complex organ such as the heart....

The development of a Virtual Rat has been ongoing. During the development the need for physically based simulation has been established. We present the results of in vitro testing for the examination of soft-tissue properties, and compare the results with a Finite Element simulation of the test scenario. We also provide results for the use of these obtained material properties within a mass-spr...

Mass spring systems (MSS) are frequently used to simulate deformable objects because of their conceptual simplicity and computational speed. Unfortunately, the model parameters (spring coefficients, masses) are not related to material constitutive laws in an obvious way. In our earlier work we proposed a method, which can be used to relate the parameters of the MSS to constitutive models, often...

The technology of cloth simulation can be used in many fields. Based on physical model of cloth simulation, we established the simulation system with a simplified mass-spring model. A modified implicit method was proposed in order to produces realistic animation. This method can increase the computational efficiency to a large extent and is easy to be realized with a stable and good real-time p...

Besides finite element method, mass-spring systems are widely used in Computer Graphics. It is indubitably the simplest and most intuitive deformable model. This discrete model allows to perform interactive deformations with ease and to handle complex interactions. Thus, it is perfectly adapted to generate visually plausible animations. However, a drawback of this simple formulation is the rela...

The leaf spring is widely used in automobiles and one of the components of suspension system. It needs to have excellent fatigue life. As a general rule, the leaf spring must be regarded as a safety component as failure could lead to severe accidents. The purpose of this paper is to predict the fatigue life of semi-elliptical steel leaf spring along with analytical stress and deflection calcula...

We describe the implementation details of a real-time surgical simulation system with soft-tissue modeling and multi-user, multi-instrument, networked haptics. The simulator is cross-platform and runs on various Unix and Windows platforms. It is written in C++ with OpenGL for graphics; GLUT, GLUI, and MUI for user interface; and supports parallel processing. It allows for the relatively easy in...

This paper describes project Springgeld, a real-time distributed simulation of a mobile telecommunications network. Springgeld permits real-time viewing and modiication of the simulation and its parameters, which is ideal for capacity planning and performance modeling. An object-oriented, distributed simulator was implemented in Java 1 and speedups of up to three times were obtained.

Landing mats that can undergo a large amount of area deformation are now essential for the safe completion of landings in gymnastics. The objective of this study was to develop an analytical model of a landing mat that reproduces the key characteristics of the mat-ground force during impact with minimal simulation run time. A force plate and two high-speed video cameras were used to record the ...
