Previous work showed that total variation superiorization (TVS) improves reconstructed image quality in proton computed tomography (pCT). The structure of the TVS algorithm has evolved since then and this work investigated if this new algorithmic structure provides additional benefits to pCT image quality. Structural and parametric changes introduced to the original TVS algorithm included: (1) ...

We report the results of an improved Bayesian neural network (BNN) analysis of 0.9 fb−1 of DØ data. The observed excess of events over background has a p-value of 0.081%, assuming the background-only hypothesis, which corresponds to a significance of 3.1 standard deviations for a Gaussian density. The p-value computed using the Standard Model (SM) single top production cross section of 2.9 pb i...

We report the observation of single top-quark production using 3.2 fb(-1) of pp[over ] collision data with sqrt[s]=1.96 TeV collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. The significance of the observed data is 5.0 standard deviations, and the expected sensitivity for standard model production and decay is in excess of 5.9 standard deviations. Assuming m(t) = 175 GeV/c(2), we measure a cross ...

We study the effect of supersymmetric contributions to the effective quark transition b → sγγ, including leading order QCD effects. We apply the discussion to the decay Bs → γγ. In all generality the amplitude for the two-photon emission is strongly correlated to the b → sγ amplitude which is sharply constrained by experiment. A quite general statement follows: as long as non standard physics a...

Non-standard scenarios described by effective contactlike interactions can be revealed only by searching for deviations of the measured observables from the Standard Model (SM) predictions. If deviations were indeed observed within the experimental uncertainty, the identification of their source among the different non-standard interactions should be needed. We here consider the example of the ...

Diagnostic criteria Preliminary diagnosis of post-burn sepsis can be made if six out of the fi rst 11 criteria below are met. Th is preliminary diagnosis can be confi rmed if any one aspect described in the last criterion is met. Th e diagnostic criteria are: (1) mental excitement, hallu cinations, disorientation or depression; (2) abdominal distension, diminished bowel sound; (3) rapidly deter...

Single-particle inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (sp-ICP-MS) promises fast and selective determination of nanoparticle size and number concentrations. While several studies on practical applications have been published, data on formal, especially interlaboratory validation of sp-ICP-MS, is sparse. An international interlaboratory study was organized to determine repeatability and re...

PURPOSE The effect of phonetic context on relative fundamental frequency (RFF) was examined, in order to develop stimuli sets with minimal within-speaker variability that can be implemented in future clinical protocols. METHOD Sixteen speakers with healthy voices produced RFF stimuli. Uniform utterances consisted of 3 repetitions of the same voiced sonorant-voiceless consonant-voiced sonorant...
