Staphylococcus epidermidis is a leading cause of nosocomial infections, majorly resistant to beta-lactam antibiotics, and may transfer several mobile genetic elements among the members of its own species, as well as to Staphylococcus aureus; however, a genetic exchange from S. aureus to S. epidermidis remains controversial. We recently identified two pathogenic clinical strains of S. epidermidi...

BACKGROUND Staphylococcus epidermidis is a common pathogen in medical device-associated infections and have an ability to form adherent slime. We aimed to study the effects of icaA and icaD genes on the slime formation of Staphylococcus epidermidis associated with catheter-associated infections. METHODS S. epidermidis isolates from the central venous catheter blood of patients with catheter-a...

Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis are major human pathogens of increasing importance due to the dissemination of antibiotic-resistant strains. Evidence suggests that the ability to form matrix-encased biofilms contributes to the pathogenesis of S. aureus and S. epidermidis. In this study, we investigated the functions of two staphylococcal biofilm matrix polymers: poly-N-acet...

AIM The aim of this study was to evaluate in vitro the antibacterial effect of ozone on suspension of three different bacteria inoculated in prepared canals of extracted human teeth. MATERIAL AND METHODS Ozone was produced by special KP syringe of high frequency ozone generator Ozonytron (Biozonix, München, Germany) from aspirated atmospheric air by dielectric barrier discharge and applied th...

This mini review contains a brief update on the pathogenicity of Staphylococcus epidermidis in ocular infections and it’s capability of biofilm formation and adhesion on the materials used in intraocular lens implants in cataract surgery patients. The review also gives an update on the genetic and molecular aspects in the understanding of biofilm formation by S. epidermidis strains on medical i...

PURPOSE The aim of this study was to explore the risk factors, clinical symptoms, hematological parameters, causative pathogen and antibiotic susceptibility of neonatal sepsis in a Chinese NICU. METHODS A retrospective survey was conducted on 116 cases of neonatal sepsis in NICU at the Maternal and Child Care Hospital in Shenzhen, China from January 2009 to December 2012. Patients were divide...

Twenty-seven strains of a reddish violet pigment-producing variety of Staphylococcus epidermidis have been recovered from normal human skin. They closely resemble the previously unique Castellani strain, named Micrococcus violagabriellae, which was placed by K. J. Steel in S. epidermidis. These strains are classified as S. epidermidis by using the Baird-Parker schema; however, besides the pigme...

Staphylococcus epidermidis is a Gram-positive bacterium that is prevalent on human skin. The species is associated with skin health, as well as with opportunistic infections. Here, we report the complete genome sequence of S. epidermidis 14.1.R1, isolated from human skin. In bacterial interference assays, the strain showed exceptional antimicrobial activity.
