Ten patients with severe neurological disease that was clinically indistinguishable from subacute combined degeneration of the spinal cord were found to have normal serum vitamin B12 levels. All were folate deficient. Specific folate treatment led to significant reversal of the neuropathy. These findings indicate the need to review orthodox concepts of the role of folic acid in maintaining the ...

Metformin is an invaluable hypoglycaemic agent. We report two cases who had symptomatic vitamin B12 deficiency related to metformin use; the mechanisms are discussed. The clinician must be aware of the possibility of metformin-associated B12 deficiency in users who suffer cognitive impairment, peripheral neuropathy, subacute combined degeneration of the cord or anaemia.
An abnormal excretion of amino-acids in the urine of patients with Addisonian pernicious anaemia in relapse has been reported by Weaver and Neill (1954), by Keeley and Politzer (1956), and by Crane, Hayes, and de Gruchy (1958). Weaver and Neill (1954) stated that in five patients there was an abnormal excretion of taurine with some over-excretion of lysine, cystine, and leucine, while in anothe...
In neurological circles today the name James Taylor (1859-1946) is probably remembered mainly for his role in editing the Selected Writings of John Hughlings Jackson, the most readily available source of Jackson's contributions to neurological knowledge. Taylors' own neurological achievements are largely or entirely forgotten, but in his day he was an influential figure whose career linked the ...
Accurate R2* measurements are critical for many abdominal imaging applications. Conventionally, R2* maps are derived via the monoexponential fitting of signal decay within a series of gradient-echo (GRE) images reconstructed from multichannel datasets combined using a root sum-of-squares (RSS) approach. However, the noise bias at low-SNR TEs from RSS-reconstructed data often causes the underest...
