Extravasation of Adriamycin during i.v. infusion can cause serious local complications. We have used a rat skin model to study the protection afforded by dimethyl sulfoxide and alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E) against Adriamycin-induced skin necrosis. Topical daily application of 1 ml dimethyl sulfoxide for 2 days produced a small decrease in ulcer diameter of up to 11% at 2 weeks. Topical daily ap...

Diazo transfer adjacent to a sulfoxide moiety to provide stable, isolable α-diazo-β-oxo sulfoxides has been achieved. Use of monocyclic and bicyclic sulfoxide precursors is critical in enabling isolation of stable derivatives, through introduction of conformational constraint, while acyclic α-diazo-β-oxo sulfoxides are too labile to isolate and characterize.

Thiolate-protected gold nanoclusters are explored for catalytic application in the selective oxidation of sulfide to sulfoxide by PhIO. The TiO(2)-supported Au(25)(SR)(18) nanocluster catalysts give rise to high catalytic activity (e.g.∼97% conv. of Ph-S-CH(3) and ∼92% selectivity for Ph-S(=O)-CH(3) sulfoxide) and show excellent recyclability in the sulfoxidation process.

In the title compound, C(16)H(18)O(3)S, the dihedral angle between the benzene rings is 82.7 (2)°. The O atom of the sulfoxide group is disordered over two orientations with refined occupancy factors of 0.563 (3):0.437 (3). In the crystal, mol-ecules are linked by inter-molecular C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, forming chains along the b axis.

Methionine residues in proteins are susceptible to oxidation by reactive oxygen species, but can be repaired via reduction of the resulting methionine sulfoxides by methionine-S-sulfoxide reductase (MsrA) and methionine-R-sulfoxide reductase (MsrB). However, the identity of all methionine sulfoxide reductases involved, their cellular locations and relative contributions to the overall pathway a...
