When stimulated, neutrophils undergo a respiratory burst converting oxygen to superoxide. Although superoxide is critical for microbial killing by phagocytic cells, the precise role it plays has yet to be established. It has been proposed to optimize their production of hypochlorous acid and to be required for the generation of hydroxyl radicals. Superoxide is also involved in the hydroxylation...

We studied the role of superoxide radicals in the pathogenesis of ischemic brain injury using a model of focal cerebral ischemia in 102 rats and liposome-entrapped CuZn-superoxide dismutase, which can penetrate the blood-brain barrier and cell membranes efficiently. The bolus intravenous administration of 25,000 units of liposome-entrapped CuZn-superoxide dismutase elevated superoxide dismutase...

Activated phagocytes release the haem enzyme MPO (myeloperoxidase) and also generate superoxide radicals (O2*-), and hence H2O2, via an oxidative burst. Reaction of MPO with H2O2 in the presence of chloride ions generates HOCl (the physiological mixture of hypochlorous acid and its anion present at pH 7.4). Exposure of glycosaminoglycans to a MPO-H2O2-Cl- system or reagent HOCl generates long-l...

abstract   anthocyanins are natural pigments widely spread in nature. anthocyanin color molecules are a subclass of flavonoids. they are responsible for red, purple, and blue colors of many flowers, fruits and vegetables. fruits and berries are sample sources of anthocyanins in nature. in many researches, the positive effects of fruits and berries intake on human health have been reported. anth...

Superoxide dismutases play a key role in the detoxification of superoxide radicals and thus protect cells from damage induced by free radicals. Within mitochondria manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) provides a major defence against oxidative damage by reactive oxygen species. Polymorphism in the mitochondrial targeting sequence of MnSOD has recently been associated with risk of breast cance...

OBJECTIVE Antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and venoconstrictor properties have been attributed to extracts from Aesculus hippocastanum. These unusual and diverse properties may be possibly basically linked with ability to scavenge free radicals. MATERIALS AND METHODS The scavenging capacity of dry horse chestnut extract of and escin have been investigated in vitro against superoxide anion radic...

Superoxide dismutase (SOD) plays an important role in detoxication of the organism. Its function is to protect the organism against the cytotoxic action of free radicals. The highest expression of superoxide dismutase was observed in the hepatocytes adjacent to the hydatid cyst. The expression of this gene in the hepatocytes of infected livers 5 cm apart from the infection site was slightly lower.

We demonstrated that oxidative stress plays a role in freeze-thaw-induced killing of Campylobacter coli following analysis of mutants deficient in key antioxidant functions. Superoxide anions, but not H(2)O(2), were formed during the freeze-thaw process. However, a failure to detoxify superoxide anions may lead to spontaneous disproportionation of the radicals to H(2)O(2).

A mutant of Schizosaccharomyces pombe deficient in both superoxide dismutase with copper and zinc as cofactors and glutathione was hypersensitive to menadione, which intracellularly generates superoxide radicals, and showed short chronological lifespan with more oxidation of proteins. Disruption of the sir2 gene in the double mutant enhanced the short chronological lifespan without more enhance...
