We study the curvature flow of planar nonconvex lens-shaped domains, considered as special symmetric networks with two triple junctions. We show that the evolving domain becomes convex in finite time; then it shrinks homothetically to a point, as proved in [22]. Our theorem is the analog of the result of Grayson [13] for curvature flow of closed planar embedded curves.

We define a generalized mass for asymptotically flat manifolds using some higher order symmetric function of the curvature tensor. This mass is nonnegative when the manifold is locally conformally flat and the σk curvature vanishes at infinity. In addition, with the above assumptions, if the mass is zero, then, near infinity, the manifold is isometric to a Euclidean end.

This note is a study of nonnegativity conditions on curvature which are preserved by the Ricci flow. We focus on specific kinds of curvature conditions which we call noncoercive, these are the conditions for which nonnegative curvature and vanishing scalar curvature doesn’t imply flatness. We show that, in dimensions greater than 4, if a Ricci flow invariant condition is weaker than “Einstein w...

Using Seiberg-Witten theory, it is shown that any Kähler metric of constant negative scalar curvature on a compact 4-manifold M minimizes the L-norm of scalar curvature among Riemannian metrics compatible with a fixed decomposition H(M) = H ⊕ H−. This implies, for example, that any such metric on a minimal ruled surface must be locally symmetric.

By variational methods, for a kind of Webster scalar curvature problems on the CR sphere with cylindrically symmetric curvature, we construct some multi-peak solutions as the parameter is sufficiently small under certain assumptions. We also obtain the asymptotic behaviors of the solutions.

Recall that the radius of a compact metric space (X, dist) is given by rad X = minx∈X maxy∈X dist(x, y). In this paper we generalize Berger’s 1 4 -pinched rigidity theorem and show that a closed, simply connected, Riemannian manifold with sectional curvature ≥ 1 and radius ≥ π2 is either homeomorphic to the sphere or isometric to a compact rank one symmetric space. The classical sphere theorem ...

Motivated by searching for positive radially symmetric solutions in a fixed exterior domain in RN for partial differential equations involving the curvature operator, the global positiveness and uniqueness of (*) is also considered. Several examples illustrate the discrepancies between the bounded and unbounded Φ. The results for the curvature operator and the classical Φ-Laplacian are compared...

In this paper we discuss curvature tensors in the context of Absolute Parallelism geometry. Different curvature tensors are expressed in a compact form in terms of the torsion tensor of the canonical connection. Using the Bianchi identities some other identities are derived from the expressions obtained. These identities, in turn, are used to reveal some of the properties satisfied by an intrig...

It is easily seen that the graphs of harmonic conjugate functions (the real and imaginary parts of a holomorphic function) have the same nonpositive Gaussian curvature. The converse to this statement is not as simple. Given two graphs with the same nonpositive Gaussian curvature, when can we conclude that the functions generating their graphs are harmonic? In this paper, we show that given a gr...
