Portal hypertension in patients with cirrhosis is the cause of many dangerous complications, such as hepatic encephalopathy, ascites, and gastro-oesophageal variceal bleeding. Gastrooesophageal variceal bleeding is the cause of more than one-third of deaths in patients with liver cirrhosis [3]. The effect of fundoplication on patterns of gastro-oesophageal reflux and the underlying motor mechanisms were investigated in 18 patients with symptomatic reflux. Oesophageal motility and pH were recorded concurrently after a standard meal. Studies were performed preoperatively and from 5 to 27 months after surgery. Fundoplication virtually eliminated reflux in all but three patients. Control ...

The study aims to evaluate, at medium- and long-term follow-up, the efficacy of Nissen-Rossetti fundoplication to control both gastro-oesophageal and pharyngeal reflux, detected with the use of 24-hour pH-multi-channel intra-luminal impedance. Of the 1000 patients who underwent Nissen-Rossetti fundoplication in our Division since 1972, the laparoscopic approach was adopted in 428 consecutive pa...

BACKGROUND Adenocarcinoma of the distal esophagus and gastric cardia are defined by the relationship of its epicenter to the gastro-esophageal junction, which is presently defined as the end of the tubular esophagus. We have recently suggested that the true gastro-esophageal junction is best defined by the proximal limit of gastric oxyntic mucosa. AIM To reclassify adenocarcinomas of this reg...

The aim of this study was to determine the efficacy of pectin solution, which increases the viscosity of liquid nutrient, for prevention of gastro-esophageal reflux in comparison with half-solid nutrient. The subjects were 10 elderly patients undergoing percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy feeding. Twenty-four-hour esophageal multichannel intraluminal impedance and pH testing was performed durin...

BACKGROUND The possible pathophysiology of the relationship between gastro-esophageal reflux disease and apnea of prematurity has been widely investigated. Various physiological protective reflex responses provide a plausible biological link between gastro-esophageal reflux and apnea of prematurity. It is uncertain whether or not there is a causal relationship between the two diseases. PATIENT'...
